Poll: Rank these 4 colleges [SCALE: 1-10] on their QUALITY of education & Prestige!!

Alright, I have a list of colleges here, rank them from a scale of 1-10 on (1) how prestigious they are, and (2) the QUALITY of their Education across ALL fields, not just one major or one group of majors!!

University of Maryland, College Park
Virginia Tech
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins University
Carnegie Mellon University
University of California, Berkeley

Alright, take it away....

9- Johns Hopkins University (incredible graduate prestige!!!)
9- University of California, Berkeley (incredible graduate prestige!!!)

8- Carnegie Mellon University
8- University of Virginia

6- University of Maryland, College Park
5- Virginia Tech

Two of the best research universities in the world. /thread

on a scale of 1-10, I give your ability to count to 4 colleges a 0.

That said, Berkeley and JHU stand out above the rest.

hmmm...so the general vibe is JHU > CMU?!

If you want a tech field CMU is one of the best around, far superior to JHU. For anything else (besides maybe business), I'd go JHU.

I'd say Hopkins and CMU are about the same, and it really depends what you emphasize more. I'd rather be in Pitt than Baltimore though.

^actually I'm from MD, and Baltimore [ignoring certain parts] is actually a very nice place :)

^I'm from MD too. I'd still rather not go to college instate, which is why I'm attending a school in PA right now.

I personally think that CMU is better overall than Hopkins, but that's probably because Hopkins med school somewhat overshadows other parts of it like IR and the humanities where it is stronger than CMU.

9.5 UC Berkeley (I'd consider their graduate programs overall to rival HYPSM)

9.0 Johns Hopkins (again, countless of programs in the top ten)

8.0 Carnegie Mellon University (variety of strengths in humanities, arts, and engineering, CS)

7.5 University of Virginia (It has a good business program? Its a legit top public school

6.5 University of Maryland, College Park (legit college, though on PR, its ranked among the top colleges that never study....huge campus, great D1 sports, ugh....beautiful campus?)

6.0 Virginia Tech (strength in engineering, probably strong graduate wise though its undergrad is kinda low on the overall engineering UG rankings...Nationally known though for that incident not so long ago...)

Please. Correct me if I am incorrect. So because the med school overshadows other parts of Hopkins that is "stronger than" CMU such as IR and humanities...CMU is "overall better" than Hopkins. <---LOL

International prestige between CMU and JHU.. JHU wins easily. National JHU has the edge too. Quality of education wise, JHU i would say. Although its med sometimes gets spotlight, it has countless wonderful programs with very high ranks. Overall Prestige and Education:

Berkeley:9.1
Johns Hopkins:9.0
Virginia:8.2
CMU:8.0
College Park:7.2
Virginia Tech:7.0

Why do a bunch of college noobs care so much about prestige in the first place? Do your best wherever you are and you'll get somewhere in life, it's almost guaranteed!

CMU, then Berkeley, then Virginia, jhu, then college Park, then VT

hmmm...well in light of the new ranking by US News, this is how it ranked!

(15) Johns Hopkins University

(21) University of California, Berkeley

(22) Carnegie Mellon University

(23) University of Virginia

(53) University of Maryland, College Park

(71) Virginia Tech

I can't help but notice the small difference between Berkeley, CMU, and UVA but then a much larger difference between those 3 school and College Park, and even larger with Virginia Tech.

While Johns Hopkins sits on top, with a respectable lead over the second, third and fourth!!

Thoughts? Do the US News Rankings accurately display the educational quality of JHU and the other schools?

^ Berkeley has more renowned academic programs in a much broader range of fields than JHU, CMU and UVA.

^ Berkeley does have a number of top academic programs. Though if you wish to know, Johns Hopkins has a number of programs in the top ten as well. Hopkins does stand its own against UC Berkeley. ::roll eyes::

Public health, Biomedical engineering, Art History, Creative Writing, Egyptology, History, Economics, Biochemistry, Cell biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Epidemiology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Pathology, Assyriology,
Cognitive science, Chemical engineering, Mechanical engineering, East Asian languages and cultures, English, Italian, Near and middle Eastern studies, Astronomy and Astrophyics, Physics, Environmental Engineering/Geography, Sociology, Immunology, Pharacology, Electrical engineering, Human Development and Family studies, Classics and Classical languages, European Studies, French language and Literature, Spanish language and literature, Biostatistics, International Relations/Affairs, Nursing, Environmental Health Sciences, ancient history....all top ten.

The Peabody Institute Music Conservatory is top ten as well, offers world class majors and degrees in the study of music to Hopkins students as well..

What I meant was that my knee jerk reaction to CMU vs JHU is JHU is more med/life sciences while CMU is engineering, CS, business, econ, theater, etc. I know JHU has a lot more programs that are top notch, but they don't come to mind when I first think of the school. Overall I would say both are peers, but there's just more about CMU that I like/pay attention to.

UCBChemEGrad, if anything, I would say JHU and Berkeley would be peers, and btw, my referece was towards the graduate pHD rankings so JHU does stand up against its own there. Undergraduate wise, I don't think its much an insult to say we are peers, because I think we are. Berkeley definitely needs to up it up to T15, or T20 to start it off because it definitely deserves it.

Venkat89, okay, now you know that JHU is med/life sciences and a lot more lol. I never knew anything about CMU other than engineering, CS, busienss, theater and DARPA. lol

Phead, I agree with you that JHU and Berkeley are peers. No question. Both are top research universities.
