Polyphasic sleep - good idea?

So, I'm sure everybody on here gets 90% averages without even trying, but I don't. I just get 80%.

So, in order to get into McGill, I need a 90% average.
I have a job. I'm a workaholic, actually. I have way too much money that I spend on nothing. But I need to quit this job, because next year my scheduale is not a joke.
Oh, wait. I CAN'T quit, because I'm used to the money, and I stupidly got a blackberry, with a three year contract. I NEED this job to pay for it.

Solution? Polyphasic sleep. I sleep for 2 hours at night, and take 20 minute sleeping intervals every four hours. That way, I can have a shift from 4:30-10:30pm, and then sleep for 2 hours, then study.

Is it a good or bad idea?

I tried that for about 2 weeks last year, and I was actually much less productive than I would have been if I had just slept normally. I was too tired most of the time to do much of anything… adjusting to it at first was excruciating, as was switching back to normal. I just don’t see it working that well for a high school student, considering most of us are in school for like 8 hours solid (or more) and can’t just take naps. It seems like it’d be optimal for a college student. Then again, obviously everyone has different sleep patterns, so YMMV… might as well try it.

I would say try it out while you don’t have too much on your plate (the summer? a weekend?)
See how you like it.
Personally for me, I have no idea how i would react to it. I don’t get enough sleep either, but sleeping for 20 mins dosn’t sound too nice in my opinion lol

I’d suggest reading EVERYTHING you can find that has to do with the topic before making a decision. From what I hear, it works pretty well, but only if you can consistently sleep/nap at the same time every. single. day. Which is pretty freakin’ difficult if you’re a teenager with a busy schedule … but yeah, I don’t know! It might turn out alright.

Okay, well tommorow is my first day of summerschool (I forgot to take physics). It ends July 31st. Should I try it out now? Or in August?

btw, what does YMMV mean? unless it was trying to spell out YNWA… ;)

Do not try it. I tried it for a couple weeks too, but I was so sleepy all the time that I ended up quitting the plan entirely after like three days.

^^…Physics? haha. Maybe you should try it in August… :]

But yea. I get confused by these “abbreviations” all the time too. As sad as it may sound, it took me around half a year to figure out what IMO meant. And thats only because someone explained it to me. Same thing with FTW. I just kind of branded them with the common feeling people give off when saying it…so I never really felt the need to learn the exact meaning. I looked up ■■■ though…

Anyways. Sorry for kind of hijacking your thread.

Honestly I don’t think this would work.

Ok, I hate people that bash this because they whimp out after a week or two.

As a high school student, it is simply NOT POSSIBLE. You need to take a nap every 4 hours or so of about 30 minutes, and then sleep about 2 hours each night. You need to sleep at the SAME TIME for the SAME AMOUNT OF TIME each and every day. Your body takes about three weeks to adjust to it. If you take an extra nap then it is going to take your body A LOT LONGER to adjust to it.

I did this last summer and it was simply amazing. I had a much greater amount of time on my hands and was much more energetic all day. It took me about a week and a half to get used to it, and then about 3 weeks to get used to sleeping 8 hours a night again. I would love to try it again, but my college schedule does not allow it between school, work, and friends.

yea i just don’t see how this is conceivable with people’s schedules… but it sounds like an interesting concept

my friend wants to try it out during college

If you don’t have anything right after school, you could probably do one of your naps during lunch. Too bad I have track though, I would basically need two study halls if I wanted to do it.

YMMV = your mileage may vary

Either ask your parents to chip in for the phone or scrap it. I’m sure you’ll have to pay some sort of fee to get out of your contract, but it can’t be more than what you’d have to pay over 3 yrs for the plan.

Okay, thanks for the advice everyone =)
I’m going to try it in August, when I have nothing to worry about except my job (the naps can be arranged to fit into my scheduale.
Haha my parents are not going to pay for my blackberry, its $70 a month
My god, if it actually succeeds, I’ll have at least 28 extra hours a week that I can use to study!Oh man, I’m such a little nerd 8-)

you might try everyman instead of uberman
[Everyman Sleep Schedule@Everything2.com](<a href=“Findings: - Everything2.com”>Everyman Sleep Schedule - Everything2.com)

Do not do this ! Sell the blackberry- seriously. I have tried it. I was trying to cram for my exams/tests b/c I didn’t study. (don’t ask)
Anyway, i’d pull all nighters and i’d wake up dead. I tried sleeping for two hours then going to sleep and then waking up and so on- and doing it again. I’d wake up at two and think I can’t do this- I have to sleep. Then I’d wake up and try to study. I couldn’t even study decently. Worse, when I went to school I would be so tired. I’d fall asleep in math class, social studies class, chemistry, spanish- it was ridiculous. It killed my GPA.
My response LISTEN - DON"T TRY IT! It is death…

If you’re not going to stick with it long term, don’t start in August. You’ll have just gotten used to it when schools starts.
