I want to go to Pomona way more than any other college (besides Harvey Mudd, which is a somewhat close second), but the thing is I didn't become really interested in Pomona until late November, and by the time it became my top choice was early December, past the deadline for scheduling an interview. I'm OOS (Alaska) and I'm not sure if they even offered interviews here but I don't want to get screwed out of admission to my top choice just because I didn't get an interview. I know interviews are not required but they are recommended and I would really like to go to Pomona.

So should I email my admissions officer and express that I would still like an interview if it's possible, just to show that I'm interested? Or is it not that big of a deal and should I just leave it?

As long as you can effectively communicate your character and personality through the other parts of your application, you should be fine. I was similarly worried about not having scheduled an interview but wound up getting in anyway.

All right good thanks. I guess I was unnecessarily worried. I was rejected EA from another school that I thought was my top choice (I applied before I discovered Pomona) so I’m just really anxious that I’ll get rejected from Pomona, which I want to go to so much. I wrote a small bit in the additional info section of the common app explaining my interest in the school, so hopefully they recognize that it’s my top choice.

Just to add onto what the others said, when I tried to schedule an interview, I found out that the nearest rep lived hours away from me. Someone at Pomona sent me a very nice email saying this would not work against me at all. Very reassuring!

Having an interview can help your application; however, not having an interview won’t hurt your chances. Definitely let the admissions office know of your interest in having an alum interview.

We live in SoCal, but DD didn’t really get interested in Pomona or Pitzer until too late to schedule an interview. We were told that they filled up usually by the beginning of the school year, which is early for many kids who are still sorting out their options. My daughter went ahead and applied, we’ll just see! Good luck.

Beamom712: Did “DD” end up getting into Pomona? I really want to go there, but things happened and even though I live in SoCal, I did not get a chance to interview before applying. Please let me know. I am afraid Pomona will reject all applications from SoCal that did not do an interview.

@ilycollege, don’t worry, my SoCal D was accepted without an interview. Just present yourself as best you can on the application and know that you did your best. As other posters have said, if you’re applying to Pomona College you’re doing okay. Good luck!

Yeah. You will totally be fine. Pomona isn’t one of those schools where the interview is mandatory. My interviewer just said the purpose was to see if you are the kind of person who cares about the community, and who can contribute to it in a meaningful way. That is basically it. It is very different than other colleges. Literally the first thing my Harvard interviewer asked me was about any awards I received… So. you know. But take that with a grain of salt. If somewhere in the application, you showed that you care about a campus community, you’re going to be okay! Whether your teachers expressed that in your recommendations, or whatever. It’s fine.
