i agree big news if it can be confirmed…this would be excellent for some of the terrific students here who have been unhappy with their current choices.
Would love to see official news, because I know 2 or 3 students this would help!
Ok…the news came thru a local recruiter who said to share the info.
I went ahead and contacted the Director of Scholarships and he replied this morning.
He said that there isn’t an official extension, but unlike years before, apps that are coming are still being evaluated for merit awards.
So…my “take” on this is that if the student has high stats and a good transcript, he/she will likely be awarded.
And reading between the lines, if the stats would only qualify for a lower award, less likely awarded.
So it sounds like a fishing expedition for more high stats students.
So…high stats applicants, go for it.
AND…he says to apply and then contact him directly for further advisement…
Rick.Funk@UA.edu
Director of Admissions … (Scholarships comes under his direction)
If you do that, then send a polite email to Mr. Funk, indicating that you’ve applied/sent scores/transcripts, and include your GPA and test scores (not superscored!! Bama does NOT superscore) and politely ask to be considered. Maybe include a line or two introducing yourself
But NMFs are still guaranteed the award and can still apply…and their app fee is waived and their housing dept is waived.
@mom2collegekids Quick question as I’d like to tell a friend here in the Northeast (with smart twins!) about this (believe it or not, she’s not a CC member Do you believe this is the high stat pool they’re seeking or the higher one?
UA Scholar
A student with a 30-31 ACT or 1360-1410 SAT score and at least a 3.5 GPA, he or she will be named a UA Scholar and will receive $80,000 over four years ($20,000 per year).
Presidential
A student with a 32-36 ACT or 1420-1600 SAT score and at least a 3.5 GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive $104,000 over four years ($26,000 per year). Students graduating with remaining scholarship semester(s) may use these monies toward graduate school and/or law school study at UA.
Why don’t you have your friends kid apply and follow up with an email to the person mom2 linked upstream.
They can’t get the awards if they don’t apply…
And my understanding is the ‘Bama application AND scholarship application take a very short time to complete.
Shouldn’t they just do it…and see?
Yes they should apply. And since the scholarship app isn’t available, that’s fine. Just send Rick Funk an email asking how to proceed. (That was his advice.)
My guess is that they’ll more strongly consider those with ACT 30-36 or SAT equivalent (not superscored)
thank you…i will give her the details from your note & see what happens!
@mom2collegekids What is NMF?
National Merit Finalist
Do they offer any need-based financial aid for out of state students who might fit these categories (in addition to the merit aid)?
^ no (besides FAFSA)
@Trixy34 what is your EFC? If you qualify for fed aid, you’d get that.
But publics don’t usually cover OOS tuition with need based aid.
Today I received a response from the VP of enrollment management.
“We have also asked the recruiters let us know if there are high achieving students that apply late that they want us to consider, and again, we will consider those. No one is having to commit to coming in order to receive the scholarships.”
They also told me that I can submit names as well. Lol. But really, it sounds like y’all can write your own requests. But if anyone wants me to recommend them right after they apply, then send me a PM.
If you apply now and qualify for a large scholarship, then email both Mr Rick Funk VP of Admissions rick.funk@ua.edu and Dr. Richard Barth VP of Enrollment Management rick.barth@ua.edu and provide stats and mention that the the scholarship would be needed in order to afford to attend.
It sounds a bit “odd” but both VP’s have now told me this. It sounds like they want some more high stats students.
