Possible IGETC Problem - Please Help!!!

I’ve been lurking on CC for years, but this is my first post, yay!

I spoke to my counselor at Berkeley City College today, and he said there was a possible problem with my IGETC Area 3. For the Arts section, I have Music 101, and for the Humanities section, I have Philosophy 111 and plan on using my AP U.S. History Exam (score of 5). By the way, the Music and Philosophy classes are from another community college I went to, College of Marin.

It says in my college’s catalog that the AP U.S. History Exam can be used for either Area 3B or 4F. However, when my counselor went on assist.org and looked up courses that fulfilled IGETC, he did not see a U.S. History course under area 3 and thus concluded that my AP U.S. History Exam can’t be used to fulfill that section of IGETC, when it specifically says that the AP U.S. History Exam can be used for that section on IGETC in the catalog! He also didn’t really seem like he knew what he was doing. All of the other counselors I’ve spoken with in the past said it would be fine to use the test for that section.

Can someone please help me clarify this?! I am worried sick about it! I really hope I won’t get rescinded!!! Already got in everywhere I applied including UCSD, and am still waiting on Cal and UCLA.

@lindyk8 @Cayton @2016Candles

hm that’s weird. US History should be in 3B… try to search up your CC’s college catalog’s AP policy?

Greetings fellow BCC student haha! Not to bad mouth the counselors here too much, but I’ve gotten conflicting info on numerous occasions. Sorry can’t be of help. Good luck!

Nice to meet you, @basAlbus ! Don’t see many BCC students on here

That’s the thing some CC’S have different requirements on each IGETC. For example, I had taken English 102 at WLACC and believed it would satisfy my English Communication because nearly all the LACC for English 102 satisfies that part. But, English 102 at WLACC was a humanities course. So, I couldn’t take English 102 at the same district again, even if it fell in different categories for IGETC. I had to take it at a different district. My counselor caught it. She said, it isn’t a priority to complete IGETC to get into these school’s, it just looks better. I eventually took it that Fall i was applying.

So, if other counselors said it would satisfy it, then it should be okay. But if its not, then, again IGETC is not a mandatory requirement to get into these schools.

@nika37, IGETC is awarded based on the area it fulfills at the college where it was taken. So if it is not fulfilling that area at the new CCC it is irrelevant. I’m not sure if that is what you are asking, though. It may also be that the class no longer fulfills that IGETC section even at the CCC where you took it. There will be a date to the right of the course on assist if it becomes non-valid (as of that date). However, as long as you took it before that date when it was part of IGETC it is allowed.

UPDATE: I always read too fast. I see you’re referring to AP. What’s your major? It may be that the college or school or major you are applying to will not allow AP for breadth. Different colleges have different AP rules. What’s the major? You need to look at the AP rules for that college/major.

@lindyk8 , I’m asking if the AP U.S. History Exam will satisfy Area 3B of IGETC (for transfer to a UC). My counselor at BCC said it would only satisfy IGETC Area 4F, but I think that it could satisfy either 3B or 4F.

I just asked a very experienced counselor (albeit she works at my old college, College of Marin) about it, and she said that the AP U.S. History Exam can be used to satisfy IGETC Area 3B, and referred me to this link: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/ap-satisfy-admission-and-igetc-req.pdf
She basically said the counselor at BCC is wrong and misled me.

My major is sociology. I’m not using the AP Exam for credit for my major as a prerequisite or anything… I’m just using it for IGETC General Education.

I see. It looks like maybe he is looking at the government/politics AP test (4H). ??

Long story short, the UCs approve whatever the CCCs say regarding IGETC. It is 100% in your CCC’s hands. Maybe you need to switch counselors over there to get it certified.

I agree with what @lindyk8 has said.

Also while IGETC isnt a requirement for admission, it makes your life much easier after transfer. If you don’t complete it, then you’ll be subject to taking the university’s GE requirements after transfer.

(hello fellow bcc students)

I dunno. The only History class that satisfies the Humanities section of IGETC (area 3) is History 33: History of Native Americans. AP U.S. History falls under the social sciences. I see why the counselor said it wouldn’t satisfy that section.

That link is convincing, though; maybe talk to another counselor and show them that link?

@goldencub, interesting. The link should at least negate any ill effects if IGETC deemed not completed.

Agreed @lindyk8 . The counselors at BCC aren’t the greatest and generally go by the rules they’re given, so make sure you press them to get certified @Nika37 .
