Ok, so essentially, I am 99% sure I am going to University of Pittsburgh, but I am still waiting on honors notification at UT Austin, and any scholarship possibilities there (highly improbable). But, as I am still fairly sure I will be going to Pitt regardless, I want to enroll so I can begin the application process for honors housing, which is a priority for me no matter where I go. So is it to possible to accept and then decline later? I know I would lose the $300 for the tuition deposit and pittstart, but would I lose anything else, and is it a problem in any other way? Thanks!

Last year my sister gave her $300 deposit to UVA and later decided she wanted to go to W&M. She had no problem switching out, and they even gave her deposit back. It shouldn’t be a problem for you

The enrollment deposit is not refundable so you will lose that money if you decide not to attend Pitt. In the past, the housing deposit was refundable but you should check to see if they have changed it.

Is the honors application available yet? I thought it didn’t open up until sometime next year. Since they select from all the applications, students who send in their application last has the same consideration as the student who sent it in first.

Thanks for the replies! And MTNest, from what I read online, it is available once you accept a housing contract and mark honors, then they send you an email with a link to the application. They accept on a rolling basis. Is this a change from previous years, or am I reading it wrong?

Awesome would know more but I don’t read it as they will choose the applicants on a rolling basis otherwise they would fill up the dorm and not allow further applications. It is the deadline to apply that is rolling and the date changes depending upon when you submit your enrollment deposit. This is true for all the dorms – the deadline date changes – so make sure you take note of the date when the housing packet arrive. The guarantee for housing is preserved if you get your housing stuff in by the due date.

The application for ANY on-campus housing (of which UHC counts) is rolling. That is, you send in your money and your choices for top 3 (which I think UHC should not be on that list). Once you’ve done that, you can go fill out the UHC application from the website. That application is NOT rolling. They wait for everyone to turn it in, and THEN decide who to put in the dorm.

So, basically:

–Turn in housing money sooner = better chance of getting top choice-NON UHC dorm (assuming you don’t get in)
–Turn in money later = doesn’t matter IF you get into UHC dorm as it is not part of the rolling process

So you need to weight the chances of whether or not you will get UHC. If you think you will, there is no benefit in sending in your deposit now, since you don’t need to worry about getting your top-choice non-UHC dorm. IIRC last year, everyone got in…

Ok, thanks so much guys!

Will the new freshman dorm be open? I would think it would be a popular option!

Right now it’s scheduled to open for the Fall of 2013, so yes! However, that’s a theoretically start date. Construction at Pitt never really goes as planned. I guess if anyone reports it being an option for them in housing, it should be ready by then!
