How many semifinalists are there per state ?

It varies by state but it is always the top 1% so you'd just have to multiply 0.01 by the number of students who took the test (if you happen to know that....)

This is what I found at the NMSQT web site.

"Each year a total of some 55,000 high school students are honored in the National Merit Program and the National Achievement Program and more than 10,500 of the most outstanding participants receive scholarships worth a total of $50 million for college undergraduate study."

Doesn't this include the semifinalists, commended students, and other minority commended students? So I guess about 20,000 are semi's or finalists. (These are guesses based on the info above) Anyone else want to approximate at how many people are only semi's or finalists?

214, 98%, New Jersey so def not semi-finalist :(
i wish my state wasn't so smart.

Shouldn't the number of semis be like 1/3 and the number of finalists 15/16 of the semis...

so what exactly does one have to do in order to advance from semifinalist standing to finalist?

So the school's supposed to tell you if you got commended? Nothing in the mail?

yes, your school is supposed to give you a letter saying you're in the top 50,000, asking you two colleges that you are thinking of applying to so they can send the colleges some info. about you
