Post questions about UGA here!

I have a question! Is it possible for non Honors students to sign up for Honors courses?
(I was really committed into getting into UGA Honors but wasn’t accepted. Nor was my friend who got into Duke but that’s another story…)
I heard that Honors classes are small in class size, something that I really would enjoy having the privilege of. I plan on applying for honors after first semester anyway but I was just wondering. :)

No. Work hard in the first semester and apply again. Good Luck!

I go to georgia state and it’s been hell. I’m debating whether to stay at GSU for one more semester and go to UGA or transfer to Ohio State(i’ve been accepted)

I’m a predental biology major. I might switch to biochemistry if I go to UGA.

Can you tell me more about ochem, pchem, bio I and II, gen chem, and what professors to avoid?

Also, is there a chance to do undergrad research?

Unfortunately, I’m a little out of touch with which professors are teaching the basic sciences since it’s been 4 years, and they switch up professors. I had Hubbard for ochem, Armstrong for bio 1, and Stanger-Hall for bio 2 (I never took pchem and my gen chem prof isn’t there anymore). Hubbard was amazing, Armstrong was good, and Stanger-Hall is good, but her tests are difficult. Morrison subbed for us in ochem once, and I didn’t like his teaching style (it was less structured than Hubbard). I also heard from others that he tends to go slow at the beginning, then tries to cover a crapload of material right before the test. I think intro bio is ridiculously easy and can be self-taught, so I don’t think which professor you have makes a big difference (then again, I do well with bio anyway, so that’s just my opinion). I found that ratemyprofessor.com was usually true, but I would still take it with a grain of salt.

If I’m not mistaken, biochem majors are required to do research (that may or may not be true), but there are plenty of chances to do undergrad research. Most open positions aren’t advertised, so the easiest way is to just go through faculty pages and email any profs that you’re interested in working with. They’ll tell you if they’re open or not or if they’ll be open later. Most science majors have an option that allows you to get credit towards your major for doing research in an actual lab (vs. a lab class).

Does Ohio have more dental schools than Georgia? Would you get Ohio residence if you went there? I would take that into consideration when choosing schools (if you’re able to get Ohio residence and there are more dental schools in Ohio, it increases your chances of having favorable schools).

Hi! I will be going to UGA in the fall and I want to major in biology and go on a Pre-Med track. I didn’t get into the Honors program, but I really want to get in after my first semester because of the small class sizes and I heard there are a lot of opportunities within the program for Pre-Med students. I know it is getting really competitive to get into Honors, so do you have any advice on what I should do(as far as activities and classes go) to increase my chances of getting into Honors? Any advice would be great!

Based on the application I found online, you’re only judged on your grades, class rigor, and your response to their essay question, so any activities won’t matter. Get the highest grades you can (and make sure you fulfill their requirements - see the application for details) and write a good essay. That’s really all you can do since they don’t take anything else into consideration. Be very careful when calculating your GPA on the Oasis calculator - I remember it giving me an incorrect GPA which pushed me out of the running for Honors the first semester (Thankfully they gave us two chances at the time).

My D is a freshman in the honors program at UGA. This year she said that they only accepted about 30 students at mid-year and they all had a 4.0 GPA. They also had to have at least 15 UGA hours. This may have been because they over-enrolled with her incoming class so they had to be more restrictive at mid- year. I don’t know if this is indicative of what you will need for this next year.

I know these whole “Chance me!” posts get pretty old, but I am definitely stressing over which college to attend, so I suppose I will find either reassurance or a new direction by asking.

I am obviously interested in UGA–mostly because I reside here (I am military and move every 2-3 years)–and am a Lowndes High School junior.
l have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and I am unsure of my weighted GPA at this point. Because I am military, my school stripped me of my weight, taking off all my AP and Pre-AP and Honors points (which make up the majority of my classes). This affected my class rank, obviously, but I am still miraculously in the top 10%.
I have not taken the SAT or ACT, but I am taking the ACT on June 9. Based on practice tests, I expect to do well. Because practice tests are indefinite, what score would probably solidify my chances? I am also interested in the Honors program, but I know this is difficult to get into, so we’ll see.
For extracurricular activities, I was in NJHS, NHS, a youth group, and Bands of Tomorrow; I was also a CHS Cheerleader (regretful). This Summer, I am set to volunteer in a nursing home and in a clinic, totaling approximately 100 hours. I worked at Sears last Summer (25-35 hours a week), and currently work at Wild Adventures (20-25 hours a week). I also won the Lowndes High School Creative Writing Contest.
So, with all that laid out, how are my chances? Please be brutally honest. I am hoping for scholarships, so if I even gain acceptance, what do you perceive me earning?
I am going to major in Biology on the Pre-Med track. Any thoughts? Is it too rigorous to complete with a high GPA? I gave up modeling opportunities in order to pursue a clinical profession (the agency was pushing for home-schooling and taking off time to pursue only modeling) , so I am hoping I made the right decision.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration,

Jessie - Since a 4.0 GPA and top 10% is obviously outstanding, no one will be able to suggest anything regarding chances until you has an SAT or ACT score.

Questions about Ramsey center. Is the weight rooms always crowded? Is there going to be long waits and overcrowded weight rooms during fall and spring semesters? Also, the multiple basketball gyms. Is there always a court to play or is it always a long wait.

I am a senior in high school. Ill be starting as a senior come August. I sm taking all accelerated classes and one AP when i start. The AP is in Drawing basically Art. I really would love to go UGA its my dream college. I am trying to expand my college options but its so hard when i live this school so much. I am looking forward to visiting the school this summer. I want to start in the Fall of 2013.

I have gotten my SAT scores back 430 in reading 320 in Marh and a 400 in writing. Plus i have hot an 8 on the essay which was 2-12 i scored an 8 i added that up and it came to an 1150 i consider that a bad score i am not looking foreard to retaking it i know it might sound dumb but im just not. My ACT scores are not jn yet but i know i did not do so well. Does anybody have any type of advice for. Anything will be nice please.

The weight rooms can get a little crowded in the afternoon Monday-Thurs, but there aren’t very long weight times. If you can go to Ramsey at other times of the day, then I don’t think you’ll have a problem at all. I’ve never tried playing in the basketball gym, so I’m not really sure about that.

Jenmarie, did you apply EA? I started what I think is the right application, but there are a lot of extra pages that I didn’t know were part of the early app, like extracurricular activities and volunteering, etc. I thought EA app only consisted of 3 things: SAT/ACT scores, transcript, and counselor/school recommendation. I guess I was wrong

Upsidedown, the application process seems to change every year. It is best to go here for the most up-to-date and correct information: [Advice about the UGA Admission Process](http://ugaadmissions.blogspot.com/)

The requirements to considered as a junior transfer are at least 60 credits and at least a 2.8 GPA. After i finish my summer classes I will be sitting at a 2.84 GPA with 60 credits. I plan to apply for spring 2013. Even though I’m just over the bare minimum, do I have much of a chance to be accepted? Do transfers generally have an easier time getting in as long as they meet these minimums?

AbbieWalk17: I will try to answer your question, honestly. Unfortunately standardized tests play a major role in admission to many schools. If yours is below the 25% listed for a school, then the chances of admission are low. I know you love UGA, but having your heart set on any one school, especially with a higher SAT range is going to keep you from looking at another school that fits you and you would be happy at. Looking at the colleges that change lives and a search for schools that are test optional may give you some other ideas:
[Colleges That Change Lives | Changing Lives. One Student at a Time.](http://www.ctcl.org/)

Also perhaps some schools would consider an art portfolio as part of admission. Another consideration is to see why you had difficulty on the SAT. Is this the case for most standardized tests? Do you work more slowly and not finish in time? Any problems reading/understanding/writing? You are in AP/accelerated classes which shows you are capable, but something is happening on the test and if is happens a lot, maybe asking a teacher or guidance counselor to help you figure this out would help you find a solution.
In the meantime also look at other schools you could fall in love with.

Emory and Henry and Guilford College are two suggestions.

AbbieWalk17:
Hey hang in there…i had low SAT scores too but my high gpa helped (4.0 and i was ranked 4/350) try to get your scores up a little bit more, atleast to 500s and try to get atleast 1 of those to a 600. buy SAT practice books. ive heard that ACT is easier for some so try that.
i applied early but was put on waiting list…they accepted me in feb…which is before regular admission. so keep trying!!! :D

Hey! I don’t know if people are still responding to this or not (hopefully they are) but I, too, have a few questions!! I haven’t applied to UGA yet, but I plan on applying for fall of 2013 (to attend)

I am a Canadian, in general, what are the views on Canadian students? I mean, Georgia is a southern state and in my travels to southern states I’ve gotten way too many people assuming that I live in an igloo / basically live in a frozen tundra… is that the same with people here? It’s not a huge consideration, just curious!!

I am planning on majoring in communications. I know Georgia has a large communications program, but do you know anything about it? Is it rigorous/ well respected?

I will literally know no one coming into the school. I want to pledge a sorority as well (I’m really social). Will it be difficult to make friends?

My GPA is 3.6 and my SAT scores are reading- 660, writing- 640, math- 570. For communications, or just in general, what do you think my chances are of getting in? I have multiple extra curriculars as well.

Also, would you say it’s a safe school? In terms of rape, assault, etc.

Here are the Cleary Act stagtistics - bear in mind that they don’t reflect crimes that went unreported, so sexual assault figures are almost always underrepresented:
