Quality is more important than quantity. That being said, you should probably have at least 6 pieces to show. Or maybe you could photograph something from two different angles or zoom in for a detail to flesh out the portfolio.

I would suggest taking at least 12-15 pieces, gives them a much broader idea of what you do. Also don’t edit too much, these pieces don’t need to be finished gallery quality work. If you’re interested in SAIC don’t worry about the home-schooling, the feeling I got there was that this wasn’t an issue, in fact they have a philosophy of not grading so are not looking necessarily for AP art classes, etc. They just want to see an appealing bunch of slides. And they’ll give you good pointers on your portfolio which will help with all applications.

is it bad to post my portfolio before i apply to any schools? stupid question?

Some people are wary about posting their portfolios on forums because they’re afraid that someone might plagiarize their work. I have never heard of this actually happening though.

Hey, new to the forum. I have no idea what a college art portfolio should look like or if I should even submit an art supplement (which is why I’m here!). I don’t plan on majoring in art (psych major most likely), but here are some sample pieces. Most of my pieces are prints - screen printing, linocut, etc. I have oil paintings, pencil sketches, architectural sketches, wood shop pieces, photos as well. Is my supplement supposed to be focused (i.e. all drawings, or all paintings, or all photos)? I’m planning to apply to colleges like Bard, Reed, NYU, Willamette, Boston U, Puget Sound, a bunch of UC’s, and Lewis and Clark.

Only uploaded pictures I had on my computer. Question: should I get prints matted before having my friend take pictures for my portfolio? Please comment/give me feedback!

-Thanks!

Before submitting a supplement, think about what you want to achieve with it or, in some cases, why the school accepts the supplement. Do you want to demonstrate a strong interest in fine art, perhaps leading to a double major or minor (Bard has a strong art department)? Do you want to demonstrate an extraordinary talent that will make you interesting to the school as student (some schools explicitly say…just submit something if you think your art is very high level–national or international recognition)? Perhaps you just want to show a little of your favorite ec so they see you are not a one dimensional student? What you put in your portfolio needs to support your goal.

The best feedback is from an art teacher who has helped other students apply to colleges and art schools. They can tell you honestly which pieces would support your goals and which would not.

Well my college counselor told me I should look
Into making a portfolio to send in since art is my main EC. I plan on having my art teachers take a look at my pieces, but in the mean time, what do you guys and gals think? Do you think my art will help or hurt me (btw I plan on minoring in art, may have been important to mention)

Gonna repost this. I would like more feedback

THANKS

Not everyone is going to want a supplement I think, but find out in advance, and if they will take it, submit it. I assume the same guides go for regular portfolios, which can change from school to school so you really need to check. Generally if you focus on variety, the must-have representation pieces, and make sure all of it is your very best, you can tweak it from there to suit who you’re sending it to.

hello- of what you have shown us, I wouldnt submit the t shirts, any of the sketches, or the gandhi print. I think the block print and the photos are strong.

but switters love, I like the bear playing keyboards, and three tiny dots on upper left.

OP, I am figuring out from your list of schools you are kinda kid fit right in those schools (minus Boston U) by “wearing” those T-shirts, but not sure it would help you get in by adding them to the portfolio.
How good are your numbers? like, Bard Reed are tough bunch, not SAT test taking skill thing-thou it won’t hurt if you ace them- but GPA, AP scores class rank etc?
If you are solid academic, I say better stay with academic arts, meaning goody goody super detailed still life, figure, academic photos. not hipster grunge pop art cartoon things.
You can, however like fammom said, win some award with your stuff say, local news paper contest or something, then list that to support your interest in arts, sometimes better not to show actual thing to adcoms who have no idea what is “cute” - like that bear ( wait, is that a bear?)
I say Willamette, Puget, L&C are your match-safety? I don’t think you have to scramble to get figure drawings done for those schools, as long as your app somewhat support your interest in art.
I personally liked Williamette, but know my kid won’t “get” it.
Made it to Reed but couldn’t reach L&C, the city bus line go that way stopped running at 5PM.
Do you drive? visited? even Reed is not so easy to get to from downtown as they like to say in publication. guess you can always bike.
Now, why BostonU? I just never get it. do tell !!

Here is my portfolio for anyone interested. I hope you enjoy it! :]

“even Reed is not so easy to get to from downtown as they like to say in publication”

Huh? Both the #10 and #19 busses run from downtown directly to Reed every 30 and 18 minutes, resp. That’s more than five busses per hour (ok, fewer on weekends and evenings).

^yep that’s why, going back from campus to downtown was pain in the evening, meaning you can’t really go to shows or to the big bookstore and come back later in the night.
I mean, that is the beauty of residetial college, you stay IN.
sorry to b***h
I live where things run 24/7 and can walk if had to, my kid is that, too. when I see something “easy access” I’d expext sometning easier.
If it was in same side of the river, I might have tried walking to the bookstore, but the campus is in the other side kind of deep.

oh, I remember you now, you are the mentor to the kid with the reading list!!
how do you know we are talking about Reed in here? do you do art, too? if so, what do you think of Reed’s art? anyone you know majored? where are they what are they up to now?

sorry off topic. no, on topic of reply comes, no?

Ah, got it, thanks. DD2 attends NYU, so we know about convenient transportation. I like both Portland’s and NYC’s trains from their respective airports. Some Reedies do talk about seldom coming out of the bubble. Why Reed here? I saw your “even Reed is not so easy” post. Reed’s art department is small; DD1 took a couple of courses there, and our god-daughter is taking one now, but I know no majors.

so how did you see my post? did you type in “Reed” and it popped up, or following art forum anyways? or is it ME??? woooo excitement!!
sorry off topic
well, I actually liked Reed art (and kids) much more than Bard art. kids are sort of
" well I am Reedee and you are obviously not"
" well I am Bardian and you are obviously not"
at either place but reed kid can hop on skinny bike with beautiful fluid motion while typical Bard kid would fell off or bang his knee or her gypsy skirt get caught on chain.
Don’t worry, my kid has no numbers anymore, I won’t ever come spying thus no more badmouthing either.

As a former Reed parent and volunteer here on CC, I do indeed search for “Reed” regularly, trying to answer questions, and suggesting Reed to those looking for that type of school.

CC people do volunteer for their pet school?
oh that explains.
I had this cornell non art dad swooping in from nowhere start defending how great Ithaca and life in cornell is with no regard to art program in comparison with Yale Brown which we were then taking about.
you wanna see?

I often wondered how people smell “bad rep” for their pet school in other forums they don’t frequent. one mystery solved, thanks.

Yw! Yes, the search function is powerful and easy to use. From “Search” select “Advanced Search” and you can find most anything you want. But if you want to find “art program” you need to enter it in quotes, otherwise you’ll get posts that contain either “art” or “program” instead to both together.
