I don’t understand what you mean by that

A big part of the reason I might be CCCing is to save money. As I am sure a lot of people are in a similar situation.

Ok…I still don’t understand.

Cokelly’s posts are a bit confusing, but from what I can tell, she/he is still in high school and will be attending CC to save money.

I’m not a 100% sure, but I’m pretty certain that all the UC’s save reserve spots for transfers. When I registered for classes at UCI, there were many that stated “New Only”. That being said, I think you will be competing for seats with other transfers but it shouldn’t be a problem. Most people I’ve met have stated that you’ll get the classes you want, but they may not at be at your ideal times.

Hey, question here.

I attended CSU Chico, this past year for my freshman year.

I got a really bad enrollement date, got like only 2 classes Fall 2011, flunked…

Spring semester, got 4 classes, got a D in 1 class, F in 1.

GPA is beyond horrible, I just had too much fun up there lol.

I had a 3.89 GPA in high school with AP and honors courses so I can get the grades if I have a desire to do so.

Question is, with 1 year of a terrible record, would I still be able to transfer to a UC?

I’m going to a local CCC for 2 years. Taking summer school atm.

@TonyStark93
I’m sorry to say, but UC admission is way too competitive these days for any of the top UC’s to give you a shot unless you have extreme circumstances, for instance, a parent dying or you having been in a coma this past year. It’s just that I’m not so sure the whole I went away to college, partied, then went to a JuCo for 2yrs and now I’m serious about school is a good argument. My friend tried it and it didnt work for him either. Consider this a lesson and learn from it…now that I think about it, I hear UCMerced will take almost anyone. try there?

^^That’s ridiculous. Tony definitely has a chance if he gets good grades at CCC.

What was your friends overall GPA and CCC GPA? Major? Units? Those factor in.

No Shannon, its not ridiculous. Giving Tony the Benefit of the doubt, he currently has less than a 1.0 and even with academic renewal he would need to get a 4.0 at a CCC and most people dont change their habits over night…so I guess ur right in that anything is possible, just highly improbable.
My friend had a 2.0 at her school after 1 year, went to a CCC and was able to raise her overall to a 2.95
She’s a psych major with about 40 units from a CSU and has 29 at a CCC

2.0 to 2.95 is not that impressive. Tony could definitely raise his GPA above that. Since most of his grades were Ds/Fs, all he would have to do is apply for Academic Renewal or retake the classes and then his slate would be wiped clean.

Shannon since you seem to know so much about people’s chances of getting into schools. just out of curiosity, what UC are you transferring to this fall?

Guys the problem about the whole “cleaning the slate” for me, is that I can’t return to that school to retake my classes.

It’s really really far away.

How are you supposed to retake classes at a place when you’re not allowed back in? lol… =

I did have a lot of troubles up there though I’ll admit that. My dad got a heart attack that year and almost died and etc. So there were other factors that kept me kinda shaky.

@TonyStark93

Is academic renewal an option for you? Don’t give up hope. My second quarter at CC I had a horrible GPA for health reasons (two Fs, one W, one P, and a C in a 2.5 unit class…you get the picture). I was able to make up the classes, which basically fixed my GPA, but even before I did a counselor from Cal looked at my transcript (4.0 in every subsequent quarter) and said it was clear that something happened and that my new grades represented my abilities much better. She said adcoms will take note of that, and she was right: I got into Berkeley and UCLA, and will be attending Berkeley in the fall.

If there is a reason behind it (as you said, your father’s health) and you make a jump back up to a GPA similar to the one you had in high school, the UCs may still be an option for you. Talk to a counselor if one ever stops by your CC! I would recommend trying to take equivalents to those classes at CC, by the way. Show them that you can do those subjects with good grades. That’s what I would do, anyway.

As of now I have a 3.5 majoring in business econ. I am TAP certified and looking to transfer from my ccc to UCLA. I do not have many ECs but I have worked 2 years and counting. What are my chances of getting in/any suggestions for what I can do to improve my chances?

^ 3.5 in biz econ is really low for UCLA. What kinda job do u have for 2 years? Raise the GPA, do rcon related activities

How do I get Academic Renewal if I can’t go back to the school I previously attended and screwed up in??

Academic renewal will be an option for you if you plan on applying two years after receiving those grades (well, it may be more or less than two years in some institutions, I don’t know). If you succeed, those semesters/quarters will be marked as “AR” rather than the letter grades on your app, I believe (although you should double check on that, I would hate to lead you wrong).

You simply go to the school you previously went to and fill out a form for them. Or possibly meet with a counselor about it. Depends on the school. The whole point of academic renewal is to let people who tried, didn’t succeed, and came back. Send a counselor at that school an e-mail and ask them how long you have to wait and what the process is like.

@newsoul

I don’t wanna go back to that school I left. And I can’t go back because it’s 8 hours away, and I pretty much got kicked out.

Would it be possible to courses equivalent to the ones I failed up at the CSU, at my local CC and send my grades up there so they can do the academic renewal???

Would that work???

You don’t need to retake any courses for academic renewal. You can just call or e-mail the counseling department at that school and ask them how long you need to wait and what new GPA you need to petition to get it. AR just means you submit a form, and if it is approved, certain semesters/quarters show “Academic Renewal” on your transcript and those grades do not factor into your GPA. This is different from the policy some schools have of retaking a failed class for a new grade. The CSU may ask you to come by in person once if and when you can submit your petition for AR, but since you’re so far away, hopefully not. Sorry if I’m not explaining AR very well. I know how a bit about how it works for my CC, but every school is different and I have no experience with the CSU system.

Doing courses at CC that are equivalent to the ones at the CSU seems like a good thing to show the UC you are capable of those courses, but it’s not related to AR. I don’t know if the UC would take the new grade, since it’s a different school…You should try to talk to a counselor at the UCs you’re considering and ask them if retaking equivalent courses would help you out.

@newsoul

Okay so what do I say.

I just call the school and say “Hey give me an AR on the 3 classes I screwed up in” ???
