I'm going to be moving into a dorm room this friday. My parents and I have bought practically all the stuff I need, but there's no real "theme" or color scheme to it. Plus I don't really have any posters/decorations. My parents say it's a waste of money to buy a bunch of decorations for a dorm room, and that not everyone has a bunch of posters and a color coordinated bedspread/rug/lamp etc.

Plus, I just spent like $50 buying T-shirts with Homestuck and Doctor Who references on them. So it's like I'll show my geekyness/individuality through clothing instead of stuff on a wall.

So... Are a lot of posters/decorations really necessary? Does every person have to put something on their wall?

My walls looked sad and bare, so I put some artwork my friends made and photos of family/friends. You really don’t have to spend much, if anything, to make your walls look nice.

I think in college you can do what you want. If you want to decorate do, if not don’t. From one Doctor Who fan to another, you can permeate your room with tardis blue. Lol My daughter’s room is color coordinated and somewhat themed, but she grew up with a Mom who loves interior design and coordinated everything :). She’s also moving very far from home so having a homey room was important. Regardless, you should do what you want with your room.

I understand not spending a lot of money on decorating a dorm room. I’m taking my bed spread and sheets from home because there is no reason for me to buy new ones just for a dorm. However, there are cheap ways to decorate. For example, I am looking at buying a poster for less than $10 online that says, “keep calm I’m the doctor”.

I’d recommend getting something for your walls just so they don’t look sad, but you definitely don’t need to spend a lot of money. Many stores sell posters for under $20 (and I’m sure you can find ones online for even less) so you could invest in maybe one or two of those that you like without spending a lot (even one or two posters will make a big difference). And if you’re willing to spend more like $30 on a laminated poster, you can wrap it back up at the end of the year and it will last a long time, so it can be worth the money. If you don’t want to spend anything, consider printing pictures at home, either of friends/family or anything else you’d want on your walls (if there’s something that you might want a poster of, like Doctor Who, I’m sure you could find things online related to it that you might want to put up). You don’t have to spend a lot of money on your walls, but I feel like it’s a good decision to put something up just to make your room a place you’ll enjoy spending time in.

My stuff wasn’t coordinated, and my walls were bare except for some photo collages and a calendar. One of my roommates had everything in her space coordinated and made it look really nice, while my other roommate only had a calendar in her space. Do whatever you’re comfortable with…and if that involves serious decorating, double check with your roommate.

Don’t worry about it. I didn’t have any decorations or “themes” or whatnot (I didn’t even know people did that until CC!). I’m not that type of person, and it really didn’t matter to me. Over the year, I’d get a poster or a calendar and put that up, but other than that, I didn’t really spend that much time decorating.

If you’re a decorating type of person, just put up photos or get some cheap posters (my school had frequent poster sales where they had lots of cool stuff). You can also do things like put up a white board or a bulletin board, and make it both functional and decorative =D Do what you like with it, and keep in mind that you don’t have your roommate perfect and well designed right when you move in. The beauty of rooms is that they can be a conglomeration of who you are–you can display things that you’ve accumulated over the year, you can put up new photos from college up next to photos from high school, you can get some posters of new obsessions or old ones. It really doesn’t matter. Do whatever you want =D

I Just have 2 posters but they were expensive with shipping costs. 10 for one and 7 for the other. Save money and buy decorations after you start.

Wow that is the story of my life right there I ended up buying some decorations on the Internet but I sort of regretted it the next day when I really looked at how much I’d spent.
