"POSTPONED" from University of Minnesota Twin Cities?!

I got a letter stating:

"we have completed a very careful, individual review of your application. Based on an overall assessment of your application, we find that we are not yet able to make a decision on your application to the school of design and at this time your admission decision for fall 2009 has been postponed."

etc etc

they did specifically mention that my academic credentials were good enough to merit success at the university of minnesota, but they have to look through everybody's applications from the dec. 15 priority deadline (which i made) before they come back to mine.

is this good or bad?! is this equal to gasp being wait-listed?!

my stats are above last year's freshmen for the school of design. their average act is 25.6 or something; i got a 28 on my act. my gpa is 3.6ish, with a lot of ap's and honors classes. i have great extracurriculars and if need be i can send in my recommendations which are stellar. I'm just baffled because my counselor and I had considered Minnesota as more of a safety... was there something wrong with my application that they can't accept me, but instead "postpone" me?! ahhhh

please let me know what you think, it would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

postpone probably = deferral.

My only guess is that 09 is very competitive, and that other people had your safety mindset, and it was just more safe for them. Also, UMTC has one of the lowest OOS tuitions for a good school in the country, which is probably very attractive to some in this economy.

Yup, that'd be their deferral. I'm not sure about the bottom end of admits, but you should've been fine- when did you turn your app?

Oh and by the way, there is a Minnesota forum- you could try there also.

any way to help get off the postpone list? haha :(

are you instate? My niece who lives in Wisconsin was deferred during rolling last year, but accepted in March.

I have been deferred from Uminn and Uconn as well. Its seems to me, that colleges either accept you in EA or either defer you. Is this true? Does deferral actually mean they are interested somewhat?

U of MN has a rolling admission process, so what the letter is telling you is that they have already looked at your file, and you are qualified, but they are waiting to see how the class will fill up from all the applicants who made the priority deadline, as you did. You'll get a further answer later after the U of MN has looked at its other timely applicants and after it has an educated guess as to its yield. I think the U of MN was a bit overenrolled this year (at least, the dorm space got completely full), so they are perhaps being a bit conservative about making offers of admission until later in the admission cycle. Good luck.

Yup, you got deferred...
don't be too stressed out...ALOT of people applying to the U of M get waitlisted simply because of the number of applicants applying there (by the priority date alone, they get about 20,000-25,000, and then about 10,000-15,000 more afterwards). However, there are alot of people who later come off the wait list because of their qualifications..
And, looking at your GPA and ACT score, thats about what the average is for most of the kids applying to the U of M, so like tokenadult said, they're pretty much waiting it out a little to see other applicants after the priority date...
And yes, 09 is REALLY competitive for the U this year because it offers fantastic aid and it is alot cheaper compared to other state schools, and pretty much everyone in MN is applying here for their safety school...so don't stress out..the admissions office is just a little overloaded with applicants..

i have to disagree about the defferal
i got the same letter from U of M, & it came as a complete shock

act-30
gpa-3.65
11 ap classes
great ex.c

i was really disappointed, but i know alot of people that were postponed at U of M last year & were accepted after they turned in their 2nd semester grades.
no doubt it's more competetive this year, it always is, but i don't think it's an automatic defferal. definitely not equivalent to the wait list.

keep your hopes up :) i'm just trying to ace my finals, i've heard your senior grades can make or break their decision?

This happened two years ago to students with outstanding qualifications who applied later in the Fall. About three or four years ago Minnesota hired a marketing firm to boost out of state applications and these free, quick response priority apps may also be creating an unusually high demand.

The University of Minnesota is rapidly becoming much more selective, and in the current economy it's come to look like a real bargain both to Minnesota residents, residents of tuition reciprocity states, and true OOS applicants who now pay only $4,000 more than in-state tuition. My guess is they've had a big jump in applications and are not sure what this means for yield at the top end, so they're "postponing" a lot of applicants they'd have been very happy to have in previous years while they see how the extremely high-end applicants shake out. Most of those kids will get into a lot of other very good schools. You may be just fine. But it's not a sure thing.

My daughter applied to arts & sciences, but was accepted to liberal arts. They said they'll get back to her on the arts & sciences college after they've reviewed their applicant pool. However, she is in. She got a 29 on the ACT. Her gpa is 3.8 (unweighted)

^^Sorry - I meant she has to wait to hear if she made it into the biological sciences colleges - not arts & science
