Potential Transfer Candidate Chances

Hey. I am looking to transfer after my sophomore year and wanted to know what my chances are given my freshman year credentials. Thanks!

School Attending: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Cumulative GPA: 3.53/4.0
Units Completed: 30 hours
Activities involved in school: spring pledge class president for my fraternity, marketing chair for an RSO on campus, representative for class council
Activities involved outside: internship at company, job at retail store

You’re going into your sophomore year at UI and will apply to UM next January, right? Are you pursuing a particular major? Into what field do you wish to transfer?

You’re doing great and should be proud of your hard work this far. I would recommend you keep on that path and see if you can raise your GPA a bit. You’ll have more credits after another year, which UM likes to see.

Depending on your major and if you keep doing well, I think you’ll be a competitive candidate. Good luck to you!

Hi, VillageMom! Thanks for your response! You are correct. I want to go into the Ross School of Business (marketing or finance), but probably won’t get in right away. So I will have to pick a major in LSA first. I appreciate your advice and will keep working hard!

Wait… so you want to transfer to UM LSA for your junior year, then apply to Ross? What?? You realize that Ross is a 3 year program, correct? Isn’t that a bit silly?

I would just stay at UIUC. Excellent b-school and you seem to be doing well there.

Sorry, I didn’t really do a lot of research. I applied via inter-college transfer at U of I to try to get into the business school, but I’m not sure if I’m going to get in. I want to transfer to Ross School of Business but if I couldn’t get in, I would want to transfer into Economics at Michigan. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Thanks for the complement!

Your chances at Ross are very, very slim. Ross admits a very small amount of transfers, and the average GPA is really high… I want to say around 3.9 but I’m not positive. These could include Ivy-type applicants too.

I think you have a solid chance of transferring into UM for Economics. But out of curiosity, why? Your current coursework in business won’t transfer many credits to UM economics. You’d probably need a 5th year to graduate. And after that, your job prospects are likely no better than that from UIUC accounting or finance.

I’m not sure I see the sense in transferring to Mich (unless you have instate tuition there).

I have not taken any business courses yet. Only gen-eds. Also, I’m not sure if I am getting into the business school at U of I since the ICT process is very competitive. That’s why I’m keeping my options open in transferring to Michigan.

Seeing as you’re already going to be sophomore, I don’t think your chances of getting into Ross are very good at all. Basically if you can’t get in by the end of your sophomore year, you’re done. A 3.53 is a pretty good GPA but definitely not good enough for Ross. It’s also on the low end for people who successfully transfer into UM. Your chances would be much better if you could get that above a 3.6.

However, in your case, I’m not sure UM is necessarily the best option for you. As @Pat1120 said earlier, you may need a 5th year to graduate or have to take summer classes the whole time if you transfer into Econ and want to graduate on time. I would also like to warn you that job placement for Econ is nowhere near the caliber of Ross’. I am an Econ major here and know first hand that there are less internship opportunities for Econ majors compared to BBA majors. The only reason I’m even doing Econ is because it goes relatively well with Actuarial Math, which is my primary concentration. If you are interested in Business, other schools such as UT-Austin, UNC-CH, UVA or IU may be much better fits for you. Granted none of them are easy but all of them are more realistic options than Ross is.

Thanks, anthonyxy21! You brought up some good points and I will definitely take your advice into consideration!
