Hello everyone!
I was just wondering, how is the Pre-Med or Biology programs at UIUC? About how many UIUC grads get accepted to medical school?

I was also wondering if it is hard to get into UIUC if the major was Biology. I understand that Engineering is difficult, but what about a science major?

Pre-med is an advisory program, not a major. If you want to be part of the pre-med program, you check it on app. Checking it has no impact one way or the other on whether you will be admitted to UIUC. You also choose a major, which can be anything for one intending to go on to med school although many will choose a science major. The advisory program aids you in choosing majors, making sure you are aware and plan for courses needed to apply to med school, provides info on med schools, helps in application procedures to med school, other activities to aid you in applying to and getting into med school. Usually about 200+ seniors are accepted to med schools per year.

Biology, particularly the Molecular and Cellular Biology concentration, is one of the more popular majors (along with chemistry majors) for those planning on applying to med school. Its course requirements essentailly assure you will take the courses needed to apply to med school.

The distinction between easier and harder majors to get into at UIUC depends on what you are looking at. For example, it is hard to get into the engineering program because most accepted are in top 9% of class and have 30 or better ACT. Nevertheless, the engineering college actually has one of the highest acceptance rates of all of the colleges, usually above 70% – factor of getting only a certain amount of applicants for seats available and that most applicants have the high stats.

Sciences in the Arts and Sciences college are more difficult, stat wise, to get into than other A&S majors because they usually have higher average stats than the other majors. Average biology admittee is top 10% with a 29 ACT. If you happen to consider physics, its average is actually in the same range as engineering. (Though the physics major is in the A&S college, the Physics Department is in the engineering college and it applies the same admission criteria as the engineering college for admission to physics.)

I think you misread my question. I wasn’t asking what Pre-med or Biology major is. I wasn’t even asking about admissions. My question was: How is the Pre-med or Biology Major program? In other words, I understand that UIUC is a highly reputed college for its engineering program, but I was told that it’s not very good if you are looking to major in Biology. Is this true?

Taking pre-med is almost akin to taking a minor in chemistry.
UIUC is ranked in the top 10 in Chemistry by US News.

From that observation alone should you surmise that UIUC and pre-med are compatible.
As far as biology goes, I don’t know.
If your one and only goal is to get in to med school I wouldn’t worry about the biology program, I’d worry about doing well on the MCAT.

If you wonder about the strength of the biology program because it interests you, well, I can’t help you other than I know UW-Madison has a strong bio program. I know little about UIUC’s.
