Pre med

Best Pre Med:
University of Pittsburgh vs
University of Wisconsin Madison vs
University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

They are all perfectly good schools. What state are you from?

Any one of those schools will get you where you want to be. None are measurably “better” for pre-med.

Consider the COA for all schools. If med school is in your future, you want to minimize undergrad debt.

You will be more successful if your stats are the top 25% of the entering freshman and you feel fit after visit.

This is true…^

with all due respect @artloversplus I would rephrase your response to “you may be more successful if your stats are the top 25% of the entering freshman and you feel fit after visit.” @rgp2000’s success depends on his efforts, not the school he attends.

My Daughter is out state for all. She was accept at UPitt yet but is in love with UW Madison, that is her first choice. Which one do you think will give her more experience outside the classroom, like volunteering, shadowing and research options?

Which one is instate ? Where do you have a shot at honors college?

Why are these three Universities on your list?

Location, size, hospital on Campus, reputation, research, volunteering and shadowing opportunities, admission to med school, football town

“My Daughter is out state for all.”

That is probably not a good idea, although details can vary in individual cases. MANY universities have very good premed programs. Medical school is very expensive. You should try to save money for undergrad and if possible still have money in the bank for medical school. Thus you should at least very seriously consider your in-state public options.

Another issue is that the majority of students who show up at university intending to be premed change their mind before they finish undergrad, and of those who do get around to applying to medical school a large number (probably a majority) don’t get in anywhere. Thus your daughter needs to have a plan B.

“Why are these three Universities on your list?”

The three universities in the original post are very good schools, but this is nonetheless a very good question.

Where do you think it will increase her chances to enter in the medical school?

What’s your budget?
What are her stats?
Since she got into Pitt, did she get a merit scholarship there? Honors college?

@Jugulator20 That is true in all cases. However, we, as strangers on the net, know nothing about the OP. OP is looking for advise which school to choose. My advise is to choose a school that is most likely for OP to succeed. Whether OP is going to work hard or survive the weed out classes cannot be determined at this point.

Not yet but if she decides to attend Pitt and earns a 3.25 GPA after 1-2 semesters she is eligible to take classes that are designated as honors.

We save yet for medical school. The question is where she will better prepared, with outside classroom experiences?

What state are you from? What are your daughter’s stats?

For medical school your D needs a high GPA and high mcat scores…among other things. I would pick a school where she is more likely ( with hard work) to obtain a medical school worthy gpa.

All three schools have what she needs… if she pursues it. I would focus on going to a school that is affordable and where she can get a high GPA.

Keep in mind that many… many start off as premed and change their minds. Others enter college refusing to be “pre” anything - but take the prerequisites for medical school and decide sophomore or junior year to go the premed route.

She is an international student, top 10 class rank, Sat 1340, Toefl IBT 110, IB Hl, NHS, lots of volunteering work, varsity soccer team, summer program in Oxford and Washington University in St Louis, summer work experience

@rgp2000 :
Ok, that’s a big downside.
However, if she doesn’t get into Pitt Honors, odds are low she’ll get into UNC CH due to the cap on OOS students.

Strictly speaking, unless she’s clearly among the top applicants (hence, seeing if she got into the Honors college right away is a clue - and related perks to help with experiences and GPA) it’s not a good pick.
So, I’d have said Pitt would be a great pick if she was selected for Honors, but since she hasn’t it indicates she’s not among the strongest students and runs a high risk of being “weeded out”.
Or is it she hasn’t applied yet but still could?
That leaves UWisconsin (where Honors is by application after getting in). But is she top 25% there? Is it affordable without debt?

Are there any other universities she’s considering?

Is she planing on med school in the U.S.? If so, the acceptance rate for internationals to a U.S. med school is 3%, 10% if you are Canadian.

UW Will be affordable without debt and tomorrow she will take another SAT exam where she could increase her notes for make an Early action Application at UW Madison.
