Hi,

I am going to be a freshman at U of M in LSA, but I'm hoping to enter Ross after applying freshman year. I registered for the following classes, but I can add and drop classes as long as there is space available. I really enjoyed my experience during my visit so I chose it, but declined UVA (OOS, same for UM) -even though I got into their honors program and not Michigans - and also did not get in preadmit, but I had no previous business related ECs in high school. I heard UVA's commerce school is a lot easier to get into than Ross but I'm hoping I made the right choice in the end. I am entering UM with a 15k scholarship, so UVA was also a lot more expensive than UM. Anyway, here's a list of my classes for the fall term:

ECON 101
MATH 115
POLSCI 300
PSYCH 211
UC 102

The last two are requirements for the living community that I'm a part of, and I'm not sure if its not advisable to take calc and Econ together...I took AP Calc and AP Macro but got fours on both because I didn't study/could really care less towards the end of senior year. Any comments on my schedule and any other tips will be appreciated!

This is my first post on CC because I steered clear of it during the admissions process because I didn't want to totally ruin my hopes and dreams. So I'm gonna ask a second question on this post - I saw that Ross is 30% female... i was wondering, as a female, is it because fewer girls apply, or if they are not as competitive as their male counterparts. Thanks so much!!

that schedule seems pretty standard for students planning on applying to ross.

Thanks for the feedback - anything else I should keep in mind? After orientation it feels like half the people I met were going to apply to Ross…hope it’s not like the college process all over again…

nothing you probably haven’t thought of… keep your grades up, try to join meaningful student orgs on campus (business-oriented will probably help), and write good essays for your ross app.

keep in mind that a ton of kids that apply to ross are unqualified simply due to subpar GPAs, so assuming you maintain a high GPA you really aren’t competing with as many other students as it might initially seem.

Well econ 101 is micro so it isn’t gonna be anything like AP Macro. You should be alright taking them together though. Just take good notes and realize that you need to know the material extremely well for the exams because only 15% of students get an A and 10% get an A- in those classes due to the curve.

Will taking Econ 101 and math 115 together be manageable? I’m curious because I may want to do the same thing

Depends on what your strengths are. If math or econ never came easy to you, you may want to take them separate semesters. Math and Econ both have 3 exams a semester and from what I experienced, the exams were always back to back days or within the same week. For me, this wasn’t really ideal and one subject always suffered.

Regardless, I know plenty of kids who did this fine. My roommate loved math and so he was in honors math classes and Econ 101/102 both semesters and got into Ross, while handling the workload pretty well. Just evaluate yourself, and realize that college exams aren’t like high school exams where you can study for them in one day… especially if you’re a person like me who has to go over all the practice exams meticulously to master the subjects.

(I took Econ 102 and Math 115 together my second semester)

econ 101 and math 115 are fine together
