Yes, yes, and yes to your question, Jazzzmomm. It is exceptionally competitive at both NEC and MSM in jazz, particularly depending upon the instrument (harder to find an awesome double bass player than a guitarist or drummer).

wallflower, good luck to you.

Thank you!

Anybody find out about MSM voice pre-screening?

I just recieved a response from Indiana University. I was kind of nervous at first since I applied back in September, I thought they didn't like my pre-screening CD but I finally heard from them four days ago via email. My audition is this Friday so wish me luck! I will be a transfer student majoring in Voice Performance and Music Ed....I also heard back from DePaul University and my audition for that School is Feb 11...

I only had to do one school for Pre-Screening and that was U. of MD. But, I didn't get accepted to their music program (My audition sucked because I was sick during my recording). I was kinda bummed because I really loved U of MD but I knew I couldn't make it in because U of MD has a tough music program. Oh well, there is always graduate school.

AISASAMI,

My daugher will be auditioning at Univ. of Maryland this month. She is a soprano. What can you tell us about their program? We have heard it is good but difficult to get into. Do you know anyone who goes there? Any help would be appreciated!

Linnlew: Congrats to your daughter. I don't know much the program except it was hard top get in and it's a really good program, very prestigious. But I don't much more (because I applied to MD because I live there and get state money and for MD's Language House and I feel in love with the school when I visited it). I knew one of the teachers there, Carmen Baalthrop, because my old voice teacher went there for her degree in music education and had Carmen as her voice instructor. I also had lesson by Carmen about two years ago.

Aisasami - are you auditioning anyplace else in Maryland? You are right about UMD - there is always MM and DMA! My D didn't apply there because of size, but thinks it will definitely be on her list for grad school. Good luck to you.

cartera45: I am auditioning for Frostburg and Towson. Towson is tommorrow morning and a bit nervous (because I got accepted into the general Towson U.), wish me luck.

We will be at Towson in the morning too. Perhaps we'll run into each other. We only live about 5 minutes from campus. Are you a soprano too?

Edited to add - good luck to you!

Awesome, maybe we will bump into each other (I like about 2 hours away from Towson). And, I am a Mezzo Soprano. Good luck to your daughter.

Finally, a mezzo in the bunch - lucky you! My D thinks if she gets that "oh that's too bad" look one more time when telling people she's a soprano, she'll choke someone. She especially likes it when people are telling her - gratuitously of course - what the odds are of getting into a program and then they add "unless you are a soprano of course."

I heard that about Sopranos, too. Is because most girls are Sopranos or they have a lot of Sopranos applying? I used to sing Soprano I in high school choir and it was a bit of a competition but I never thought it was that big. Who has the better chance? Altos? (I got named a Mezzo Soprano by current voice teacher but I have been singing Alto in my school's chamber choir and sang Mezzo Soprano and Soprano in high school choirs)

Do you have any advice for tommorrow? Do you know how tough is it to get into Towson?

There are just a lot more sopranos than mezzo sopranos. That continues to be the case when there are auditions for gigs too. Sopranos show up to find a line around the buildiing. I don't know much about the audition process at Towson. If you haven't been to the new facility though, you are in for a treat - it is state of the art and gorgeous. The recital halls are beautiful and acoustics are great. It should be fun to sing there. Here is an article about the award the project won with a picture of the building. You will be able to use a practice room for warming up.

Ahhh, I forgot that they remodel the school (I went to a transfer fair in Oct. and they were in the middle of the remodeling. Was pretty bummed out that I couldn't see the school). By the way you describing, I can't wait to see it tommorrow.

Anyone from Oberlin jazz?

Just found out I passed Manhattan School of Music voice pre-screening! Audition is March 2nd, followed by Mannes on the 3rd. I'm so excited!

Good results from Juilliard. Just meeting the teachers there (for interviews) would be something to remember for a long time, so we are happy no matter what happens in the end.

Received vocal audition at Curtis! Just shocked...literally. I don't know how to react other than with pure excitement and amazement.
