Prediction of Your Rank based on wGPA

Is this possible to predict your current rank based on your weighted gpa?
My S is a sophmore. His school is not rankning student on the senior year.

His current weighted gpa (since freshman year) is 4.84

I just called the counseling office and asked. Guess I don't understand the question. How do you predict a current rank?

this really depends on the school, i mean a 4.84 would be around 10-15/420 in my school, but maybe i don't understand the question

it all depends on the school.. a wGPA of 4.84 might just be good at one school while at a school like mine it'd be pretty much impossible. also, most schools weight the honors/AP classes differently so it's hard to predict. if your son's school has a lot of grade inflation then 4.84 might not be that great but if there's not much inflation then it's probably near the top of the class

momof1, his school does not rank students until the senior year. Since I know my s's current weighted gpa, I though it maybe possible to project his rank.

can you explain the ranking system? if it's similar to mine, that would be close to top 10

cujoe169's response is what I am looking for. I know it depends on schools. What's the correlation between rank and gpa(w) in your schools?

cujoe169, in my s school an A in honor and AP courses is 5.

ok, with my schools weighting system... for my grade (changed for frosh etc.) you get 1 pt added to a 4.33 (a+, and so on down) to each class, then that value would get multiplied by the number of credits, 5 for a full year course, 10 for a full year course that is twice as long, and 2.5 for a semester course... after adding up all the scores, you add however many credits you have over 30, then you divide by the total credits, if that's close to how your sons school works, then i'd say he's probably in the top 5% comfortably

just read your last post, and yea, he's probably top 5%

cujoe169, my s's school is very similar to your school in term of the weighting system. How do you come up with calculation so quickly? Can you request gpa distribution in the senior class in your school from GC?

lol, i didn't do the calculations, my school doesn't rank but i complained to guidance and they had to give me mine, our distribution is kind of messed up since i'm borderline 5~ with a 4.65-4.7 so that's why i figured your son would be in the 5~ somewhere, my friend who has a 4.82 is around 11/12 so that'd be my guess

Thanks. cujoe
