Does anyone know of someone that was offered the prep school, got reconsidered, and then offered an appointment that same year?

I personally have never heard of that happening. It might be possible, but I doubt it.

My best guess (not sure of any of this) would be that this would happen to someone who was a few names away from getting an appointment. They were offered a prep school slot and then a few of those offered appointments turned them down. Thus, new appointments were sent out to those next on the list and the person in question happened to be one of those names.

I have heard of it - I think I heard it on this board. Not certain if it was specifically for AFA, but I know for certain it has occurred at WP, I know someone personally that got a WP prep and then a few weeks later ended up with a WP appointment.

My son is on a Falcon scholarship this year - last year our counselor did tell us it was possible he could receive a direct appointment but due to significant % of offers to USAFA being accepted very few if any rec'd direct appt last year from prep/falcon ranks - but have heard it has happened in the past

The answer is YES!

yea its definitely possible.

If it doesn't tho, definitely take the prep school appointment, its a great deal and many generals and important figures were prep school graduates as well as academy grads.

I heard that only 75% of those in the prep school go on and get the appointment the following year. What happened to the other 25%? Is it worth the risk?

I have always heard that after prep the appointment is yours to loose. The real question is not what % don't go but rather the question is of those that still WANT to go, how many get appointments.

usually they just change their mind. they decide that military school is not for them or they lose the will to work hard.
very rarely their may be a dodmerb dq that crops up during the year due to injury or illness.

The bottom line is if you are offered prep school and want an appointment then take it. I don't know what criteria AFA uses to decide who goes to AF Prep School (at the academy) and who gets a falcon scholarship. either is a good deal. My daughter is at MMI for West Point and there are 23 Falcon scholars there this year. about 8 of those are female.

the other 25% either leave, get kicked out for getting in trouble for like drinking, or just doing absolutely horrible in school which is really hard. Yes, it's worth the "risk"

I was talking to a preppie the other day who said that basically everyone at the P who really wanted to come to USAFA got an appointment. Just don't do anything stupid while you're there.
