preppiest colleges

yeah examples of brands worn by preppy kids would be: the notorious polo collared shirt with the collar up (preferrably in pink), Prada, Gucci, Burberry, Ferragamo, Valentino (I think we realize where this list would be going). Usually people who can afford these luxuries such as designer clothes can also go out and buy the flashy cars (The BMW's, MB's, Audi's etc...) and live in multimillion dollar homes.

Certain colleges and most of the elite colleges such as the Ivy's and Top 25's have their fair share of these types of students. Other colleges that have been mentioned in this discussion also have their fair share as well. These types of people will be found at many many colleges around the country its just that a high concentration of them tend to exist at particular schools which happen to be the Ivy's and Top 25's and other specialty elite schools more often than not.

I disagree, Dunkaroo... the kids you're talking about are more trendy/New-York style fashionable. REAL preppy is very old school... we're talking Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, duck rubbers, madras, weejuns, grosgrain belts, Lilly Pulitzer, Sperry, Tretorn, Fair Isle sweaters, plaid.... that's the genuine thing. The thing is, preppy has suddenly become trendy now, but they've twisted it so it's become some type of Abercrombie/American Eagle "cute preppy"- not the original. I know tons of real preppies and they couldn't care less... their parents have been dressing like this for years at their yacht clubs and country clubs in Nantucket.

My vote goes to Georgetown.

i second raspberrysmoothie. that nails my school pretty much, yachts and nantucket homes included, and really is your "true" prep (while there are i guess other kinds, that is classic old school)

and i had no idea what a popped collar was until i moved out east from california

second that

I think there really is the "new" prep look and the "traditional" one. The "new" look goes with fashion. The names that will become connected with the new look are the ones I mentioned above. The old and more traditional look will be the Brooks Brothers, Polo, Lacoste, plaid trousers, loafers etc...

A lot of schools have many of the old and new.

"yeah examples of brands worn by preppy kids would be: the notorious polo collared shirt with the collar up (preferrably in pink)"

Yeah!! They guys wear PINK popped collared polo shirts! AHHHH!!!
sorry I can't let the popped collared shirt thing go

Among public schools, UVa is the preppiest and most guilty of popping collars. Even though Coach Groh has been trying to get students to wear orange & blue t-shirts to football games, many guys still wear jackets and ties while the women don dresses.

Well, what can you expect from a school that's won the national championship in collegiate polo for the 3rd year in a row?

You seem pretty nice, but I can not consider you to be reflective of the majority of your fellow southerners. Try speaking another language in a southern restauraunt and observe the reaction you obtain from everyone present.

Bah.

yea they nickname villanova "vanillanova" haha....the preppiest schools are washington and lee, vanderbilt, rhodes, duke (sort of), bucknell, bc, and all those other schools w/ rich, white, waspy kids

Miami University of Ohio aka. JCrew University. it's just a little north of cincinnati and VERY republican.

Connecticut College, aka Abercrombie U. Need I say more?

All the kids I know who've gone there are preppy, and the name even sounds preppy!

OK guys I hate to break it to many of the haters out there, but many of the styles you are mentioning (i.e. pink shirts which were all over the runways last spring for men), as well as the brands (gucci, prada, burberry, and of course my personal fave dior) are not so much preppy as they are FASHIONABLE. Thus, I think it is a fair assesment to say that there will be people who fit the preppy description at every school, but especially at the schools that are located in big cities (in the center of fashion) and of course people in the north, because lets face it, we're definitely more hip. :-P

don't hate collar poppers! thats just how they do!

its one thing to be preppy. people have always been preppy and always will be. how about we talk about schools where everyone has tight jeans, converse all star shoes, listens to emo music, and has buddy holly glasses. hipsters if you will. but dont worry, theyre just being individuals like everyone else

dude I love buddy holly glasses on guys! :D
and i just started wearing converse shoes.
Living in the East coast now is slowly corrupting me..

a "popped collar" is no longer preppy. That was started by golfers who didn't want to get sunburnt before the invetion of suntan lotion. A prep today, not a "pseudo-prep" (ei. A and F or american eagle), would not pop his collar. However, today preps and pseudo preps have been put in the same category and poeple no longer distinguish betweem the two. True preps can probably only be found in families with "old money" in the northeast. Long live the true prep .

I'm totally one of those kids.

...Wow. How d'you guys know all this? I wouldn't be able to define "prep" if someone asked me, I couldn't identify half those brands, and I don't think I've been within a hundred miles of a true prep in my life (not counting the time I went to connecticut, because I was seven). And, just out of curiosity (not to be annoying), why is this something worth caring about?

Here in California, we're down with wearing girls jeans and tight t-shirts...
