I'm just wondering, I know NOTHING about chemistry, my chemistry 1 teacher didn't teach me anything. But is it possible by reading a couple prep books I can manage an 800 on the SAT II test?

haha I am exactly in the same situation;)

Nope. SAT II Chemistry tests a wide range of knowledge !

What if I'm self-studying for AP chem anyways and finish the textbook before the SAT IIs arrive in Jan. Will that work?

my Chem 1 teacher was pretty awful and I read Barrons and Princeton Review and got a 740 the first time and a 790 the second time, so it is doable.

I just registered for Sat II Chemistry with no prior knowledge..... omg what have I just gotten myself into??!?

So are we all up for SAT CHem in January??

haha i'm up for the june chem test ^^

@tokenadult: Do you have experience with ALEKS? Care to elaborate more on it?

I heard SAT II Chem is a hard test and though I have friends that got 800s after only honors chem sophomore year, they self-studied intensely for a week and they are among the smartest at our school which is competitive.

ALEKS isolates what skills you know from what skills you don't know. That can help a lot in focusing study. My son's downfall in chemistry classes is knowing a lot more math than most classmates, while the class turns into remedial algebra sessions instead of being discussion of chemistry. ALEKS tests what he knows and what he doesn't know and lets him focus on learning chemistry.

Good luck on the test. Raise the bar for everyone else.

tokenadult, thanks for the ALEKS info. Is your son using anything other resources like prep books? If so, would you please share what he finds helpful?

Yeah, I'm taking this in June after learning all of AP Chem so it shouldn't be bad.

But it would be hard to take it without having any Chem at ALL.

I know a few people who only took Honors and got around a 700 though (But they were seniors and had a LOT of other stuff going on so they didn't study until the week before..). I don't think anyone got 750ish or higher without AP.

Here's hoping it can be done! Our school doesn't offer AP Chem, only a year-long chem class. As with the OP's class, the teacher isn't the best. My son will have to take the chem test though. He wants to apply to MIT and needs either chem or physics. Physics is only available to seniors here, and is taught by the same teacher. It sounds like it is tougher to self-study than chem from what I've garnered from CC posts. My son is going to have to essentially self-study for the chem exam.
