Preppy music.

<p>Yeah, I sort of posted this in another forum, but I was wondering if you guys thought there was a certain genre of music that was considered "preppy." Apparently the music I listen to (Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, etc.) is considered preppy.</p>

<p>Bob Dylan???? Preppy? Never heard that before. </p>

<p>I don't know what preppy music is? I listen Jimi hendrix, Led zeppelin, black sabbath, ozzy osbourne, the who, miles davis, rush, eric clapton, bb king, charlie parker, etc. </p>

<p>I don't know if those are prep music or whatever I just know that they are rock, jazz, and blues.</p>

<p>I don't think there is really a preppy kind of music. But most preps I know listen to music like O.A.R., Dispatch, Guster, Dave Matthews, etc. A lot of them also listen to classic rock.</p>

<p>I always thought Guster was more of a hippie-ish band. Most preps at my school listen to Jack Johnson. As for me, I enjoy most anything but love the indie stuff.</p>

<p>I love listening to Jack Johnson. O.A.R. is okay I guess. I just downloaded some Dispatch stuff. It's okay. Dave Matthews is pretty awesome. I love Breakfast at Tiffany's.</p>

<p>I have never heard of any music being described as 'preppy' before, as preppiness basically means following the latest trends and that would mean simply listening to the newest, hippest music which everyone is doing anyway. Don't worry about it. But do worry about listening to Jack Johnson, it clashes with your conservative heterosexuality.</p>

<p>Uhh...what?</p>

<p>Being preppy doesn't mean following the latest trends.</p>

<p>From Urban Dictionary:</p>

<p>A true preppy is someone who:
Wears, but is not limited to, Polo, Lilly, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, LL Bean (ie duck boots), ribbon belts, prints (ie cords with embroidered whales, palm trees, etc), sweaters tied around the neck, collar always popped, looks neat and put together. Hair ribbons or ribbon headbands, pearls, and other classic jewelry pull the look together. Preppies are partial to monogrammed and engraved items (ie tote bags, oxford shirts, jewelry, money clips, etc). Colors are always brite (favorites include pink and lime green). Preppies may not always match EXACTLY but they are always coordinated. Hats are worn (ie polo player, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers), but they are unique- not designs you would see in the mainstream and the "mall".
Preppies often attend prep schools (ie Middlesex School, Governor Dummer Academy, and Belmont Hill) followed by New England private colleges.
They are confident and unafraid to express their own styles and be daring in their fashions. Preppies vacation on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Delray Beach, and on the coast of Maine. These vacation locales are places their families have been going to for years, and have histories there.
It is a common misconception that preppies are snobs. Many people view them as unapproachable, and as a result mislabel them. Preppies are not as rich as people may think they are, but they are often well off. They buy into classics rather than trends, and don't change their lifestyles with fads.
Preppies tend to have bizarre connections with other preppies they meet, always finding mutual friends/ family and people that run in the same circle. </p>

<p>Preppies don't:
* Wear tight, skin exposing clothing (ie fitted Abercrombie sexual tshirts with tight flared jeans)
* Limit themselves to mall shopping and chain stores. They gravitate towards long-established classic stores and boutiques unique to quaint New England towns.
* Wear heavy makeup and endless hair products. The phrase "less is more" is a preppy creed.
* Glue purses to their arms, especially when going to school. Lip gloss and if need be, a wallet, are thrown into tote bags along with books.</p>

<p>Wow does anyone realize that this is coming from some ghetto dictionary <em>cough</em> I'm sorry "urban" dictionary.</p>

<p>Yeah.. but check on wikipedia too. It's basically the same thing.</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Wears expensive brands (Ralph Lauren, J Crew, Brooks Brothers, etc.)</p></li>
<li><p>Is wealthy </p></li>
<li><p>Goes to a new england prep school</p></li>
<li><p>etc.</p></li>
</ul>

<p>Yeah</p>

<p>A i disagree with that definition
B basically preppy kids are at the height of fashion as they define fashion, and music is no exception except they just tend to follow the mainstream more with music, so the preppy music is just the most popular music at the time (or maybe they get into it a bit before hand). But whateva, the point is their musical style changes too often for any one band or whatever to be branded as 'preppy'</p>

<p>Umm... no.</p>

<p>You're talking about the prep wannabes.</p>

<p>there is no such thing as preppy music...that's one of the dumbest things i've ever heard</p>

<p>Again, I think this is extremely stupid. How can one classify music as preppy or homosexual??? That is stupid!</p>

<p>OAR, DMB, stuff like that, the typical dudebro frat rock stuff.</p>

<p>Oh, and 311</p>

<p>uh, WASP</p>

<p>I think surfer when it comes to Jack Johnson</p>

<p>The only preppy song I remember was LFO's Summer Girls. Usually so called preppy people here listen to B96 in Chicago which consists of pop, rap, and hip hop because they usually go clubbing.</p>

<p>LFO was a lame boy band. I don't think preppies want to be associated with boy bands.</p>

<p>usna_reject, i used to love B96 (when i lived in Chi-town)...</p>
