Hi everyone! I was hoping for an assessment of the preppiness the following schools: Bentley University, Dickinson College, Drew University, Franklin and Marshall College, Lafayette College, St. Mary's College of Maryland, Union College, University of Connecticut, University of Maryland- College Park, University of Massachusetts- Amherst, and Villanova University.

Yes, I am aware that some of these schools may not be preppy, but I put them in the list anyway just to ask. I enjoy wearing tank tops, jeans, and Converse, and I'm nervous that I wouldn't fit I with the general crowd of people at these schools.

This is my first time posting on this website, so I'm sorry if I've made any mistakes here. Thank you in advance for you help! :)

Trust me, you’ll be fine in a tank top/jeans/converse. Most of my female friends wear exactly that. Everyone wears everything. I promise you that you wouldn’t feel out of place. The great thing about big schools is that you’re able to find a niche of people like you.

If you have any questions about UMD, let me know!

Most schools tend to have a very wide range of people. There are going to be the “preppy” groups at basically any school, but there are going to be groups to represent basically any other niche you could think of as well.

UMass isn’t really preppy. I think you’ll notice certain sterotypes/styles depending on where you live on campus. For the most part, people don’t care what you’re wearing as long as you’re wearing something and you don’t smell.

^^Exactly that. College is not like high school. It isn’t so cliquish. There are people from all around the country, and even from all around the world. People from all walks of life go to the same schools. You aren’t going to be seen as an ‘outcast’ for wearing jeans, tank tops, and Converses.

I go to Villanova and it is pretty preppy, I will say that. You will probably feel like you’ve seen the same JCrew vest on half of your hall. People do look polished for class- in the three years I’ve spent here, I have only seen sweatpants outside the residence halls a handful of times. However, polished doesn’t mean preppy necessarily. People might look at you if you roll out of bed, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing because you’ll learn to look nice without spending a ton of time on it. When you’re out working you probably will have to adjust to looking in the mirror before you go out, so why not learn it when you’re learning the rest of your job skills. It also depends what school you’re in because our business and liberal arts schools are much more appearance-based than engineering or science. People are so friendly here though and there are people in all levels of price range that I think even if you don’t own the nicest things you shouldn’t feel outcast. You will definitely get a lot more ratty dressers at a state school, and I disagree that most schools have a wide range of people because that’s not necessarily true. It does sound like you might be overestimating how much people are paying attention to this though, and I think it seems like a bigger deal when you first get here. Overall, though, Villanova isn’t all New England preppies and there are so many things to love about it that if you like it you should come because you’ll grow if you’re in the right soil. Go Nova.
