I haven’t done the video yet because it isn’t due until May (crazy I know). I think it’s three musical theatre pieces and one classical and two monologues. You can find the complete list on their website! I’m not sure how they are academically.
I went to CMU’s intensive over the summer and felt really confident and prepared, so I sent out apps and prescreens really quickly. So far I’ve heard back pretty quickly. I got rejected from Syracuse, got rejected from Michigan yesterday and Northwestern as an ED applicant. I got redirected from MT to acting for Ithaca and got a callback for Pace. I requested a curriculum guide from Ithaca to compare the acting and musical theater majors, and it doesn’t look like a curriculum I’d be happy studying for the next four years. I’m on the wait list to audition, so we’ll see what happens.
@lydiara, you’re not alone, so don’t feel disheartened. My son had a similar reaction to his pre-screens but has since two great live auditions at schools he likes very much. Perhaps someone of faculty at one of the schools can speak to this, but I’ve decided to assume that faculty look at those pre-screens with a view the “types” they are looking for and don’t really listen to anyone who doesn’t match that type. You should feel confident that the vocals/acting on the pre-screen were fine, just not a match this year. On top of that, a few comments from schools on cc and other places have suggested that only one faculty member sees each pre-screen tape, and maybe you just didn’t match the requirements of the single faculty member who viewed yours. Since you were part of CMU’s auditioned summer intensive, you must know that you are a strong candidate. Just keep believing that – I’m sure you’ll feel better once you’ve had one or two live auditions, where you can show so much more than the pre-screen format allows. Good luck!
Thank you so much for saying that. It means so much. I have been in and out of confusion, disappointment and fear. I’m Ghanaian, German and Jewish, so as a biracial girl I have always felt really alone in MT. I’ve been feeling really isolated and discouraged by how things have gone so far. (Michigan and Northwestern were my top choices, and three of my friends from CMU got into Northwestern.) I am trying to move forward and am waiting to hear back from MMC on my digital audition, and I’ll be refiiming my prescreen videos and will submit them to PSU and IW today. I’m starting to really look forward to Unifieds too. Thanks so much again for your encouragement! I’m feeling much more positive
@lydiara, you might want to check out Baldwin-Wallace. It’s a great program, though highly selective (my son was rejected–boo, hoo!). We saw a show during the visit and it was clear that the school is very much in need of ethnic candidates. (There was only one darker-skinned girl on stage and she was single cast. Another ethnic “role” went to a Caucasian girl.). My guess is that they would want to see you! That is, if you would consider going to school in the tiny town of Berea, Ohio.
Funny that you mention BW, I actually added them to my list recently! That’s really good to hear!
I have such mixed feelings about pre-screens. I think there’s a few benefits (finding out if the school likes your type etc) and feeling happy they originally like you if you pass. However, I feel that it really limits the talent that they could potentially see in-person for someone who does have the voice and acting chops as other approved pre-screeners but didn’t pass because a different faculty member or something watched it.
Plus you just don’t sound/look or come off exactly the same over video, (I know I don’t) and your personal presence, in addition to your total talents, can’t be fully assessed in a video (my opinion). Guess it’s just another milestone to accomplish in this process.
Has anyone heard back from Indiana recently?
I understand your feelings @destiny95, but our kids have to get used to video auditions – many theatres do video submissions, as do casting agents for TV and film. One of my S’s has a pro actor roommate who is reasonably successful (in current B’way show) and he films video auditions almost daily in the apt. I know because my S often has to speak in hushed tones on phone calls because roomie is recording The kids will find a rhythm with all this and figure out how to best present themselves. It’s all the wave of the future.
Hey guys, still haven’t heard from Michigan is anyone else having this issue? They literally said on their website by December 23rd and its December 23rd today
Know someone that just heard a few minutes ago.
Thank you I’m sure I’ll be hearing today, they have to keep on schedule with the date they promised I’m sure
@SongnDanceMom S heard from Indiana on December 18. He passed, yay! He did write them a gentle reminder note a day or so prior to that, so give that a try if you haven’t heard.
We submitted my daughter’s prescreen to Michigan on October 25th, and we still haven’t heard back. We did get a confirmation that her app is complete with them though, so that’s not the issue. This is so frustrating.
10/25? I would call.
Same here @stage16mom. we submitted 11/22, and called them last Wednesday and they said everything was in order and we would here by the following week. I keep checking. They have less than 5 1/2 hours to make their own deadline.
Is there any reason not to just call them and ask?
Just so y’all know, 3 years ago, Michigan PROMISED that everyone who got their prescreen in before some date in October would hear on November 15th. November 15th came and went, and we heard nothing. Everyone else we knew heard. We assumed it was a no. But then, 2 or 3 days after their self-imposed deadline, they sent out a mass email to about 60+ kids saying, “Ooops, sorry you never heard…we messed up…we PROMISE you’ll hear by November 23rd.” (I"m paraphrasing). The awful thing about this mass email was that you COULD SEE EVERYONE’S EMAIL ADDRESS…it was not BCC’d, but just CC’d. They made it abundantly clear in the email that it was b/c one or two professors who were reviewing prescreens didn’t get to them. Well, November 23rd came and went…and still no email. Nothing. At that point, all my D’s friends were celebrating passing their prescreen at UMich and scheduling their auditions, and we assumed (again) it was a no. Back at school after the Thanksgiving break, waaaaay after she had come to terms with not passing the prescreen, I get a text from my D…she said, “Guess what I just got? An email from UMich telling me I passed the prescreen.” Moral of the story: “their own deadline” can be pretty meaningless. Stuff happens. These reviewers are human and they have emergencies, etc. If you don’t hear, email. Find out what’s up. Break legs.
Received “yeses” from Pace, Ithaca, and Penn State very quickly through Acceptd!
Did everyone hear back from Umich?
