Prescreen MT Schools 2017-2018

I thought it would be useful to start a list of prescreen schools for the 2017-18 audition season.

Carefully copy and paste the LAST LIST AND THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

Add additional schools (in alphabetical order) so that is appears in red. To use red post it as it appears below BUT REMOVE THE SPACE INSIDE THE FIRST BRACKET BEFORE YOU POST.

awesome! Thank you. My S’s audition year (2014), he was only required to do 2 or 3 prescreens for MT. Looks like D will be doing at least twice that. Ugh.

it does not say anywhere on the Ohio Northern website that you need to submit a prescreen

Just an FYI and I’m not necessarily telling anyone to not do a prescreen, but I was stunned to find how many prescreen schools end up taking walk-ins at Unifieds. This past year I noted the following schools from the above list were offering walk in auditions (these are just the ones I specifically remember, there could have been others).

At LA Unifieds:
Penn State
Temple
Otterbein
UArts
New School

At Chicago:

Ohio Northern
Illinois Wesleyan
Viterbo
Texas Christian

So just because you don’t submit a prescreen doesn’t mean you might not have a shot at an audition. Of course if it’s a top school for you I would submit the prescreen. Just something to keep in mind. I know I was stunned to see how many prescreen programs were taking walk- ins.

Where on the UArts web site does it say that a prescreen is recommended?

UArts does not require a prescreen

Thanks, @theatremom10

Also, Wright State recommends a prescreen but I cannot tell if that is for MT or for music.

@artskids Wright State does recommend, though doesn’t require, a prescreen for Musical Theatre which I would definitely recommend doing since they don’t attend Unifieds. It was good to know before we invested the time and expense to travel there for an in person audition that they were already interested in my D based on her passing the prescreen.

So far i see that Temple wants a dance prescreen as well as voice/ monologue. Anyone know if other schools want dance videos uploaded? And do any experienced moms have advice about a dance video? That is one thing my daughter and I need to figure out. She has a good basic dance knowledge & can pick up basic choreography pretty well- but isn’t an advanced dancer by any means. Just trying to get some advice from a seasoned MT parent. THANKS!

@savedrama4momma - A dance video is a fairly common prescreen requirement. My d had to submit her video to several programs. My d read all the requirements for the dance videos for her schools, got together with a friend who was an accomplished dancer, and put together a routine that showcased all the required elements (positions, combinations, etc.). She had to do it for at one live audition as well as the prescreen video, and got complimented on the choreography - they said, “cute routine!” (her choreographer friend was admitted to the Commercial Dance Program at Pace).

Depending on the requirements for your schools, your student may have to put together more than one video and may have to vary the routine somewhat to meet various requirements (but hopefully one routine will suffice). My d was lucky and one video met all the requirements of her various prescreen submissions.

OK! Awesome- Thanks @EmsDad I was thinking of the same idea- having one of her good friends who is a great dancer help us put with this choreography! Hopefully she will have time to help us! Where did you film it if you don’t mind me asking… did you use a dance studio space or how did you handle that? And can it be just filmed with my iPhone or should it be more polished for a prescreen? We already have a church friend lined up to video her songs/ monologue as he does A/V stuff professionally… but the room where we were going to meet for the songs isn’t an appropriate dance space. Thanks again!

Does anyone know if the schools allow you to prescreen before applying? I was looking to see which schools have their applications open and started adding up the application fees, which are hefty when you’re talking about applying to 15ish schools.

@speezagmom I believe the prescreen is part of the application process. Also there generally is a fee to audition too. If you are not going to unifieds getting hotel rewards cards is a must!

Each school is different. Syracuse and Otterbein are two that come to mind that allow you to prescreen first and if you pass then you can apply for admission

This list from Audition Hero from last year has prescreens with dates and requirements. Some are hear that are not on other lists. Is the link allowed? If not, it is auditionherohq.com/prescreen

This is a useful chart. Hopefully, it will be updated for this season! Requirements change rapidly!

@savedrama4momma - we filmed d’s dance video in a small theatre space in a church where she took voice lessons (her voice teacher was kind enough to make the arrangements for her). But you can film it in any room with enough space and light, for example, classrooms with the chairs and desks moved to the sides are fine. You can film the video with a phone, just make sure the camera on the phone has decent resolution and focus capabilities for indoor video (don’t use an old iPhone 5c, for example) and mount it on a tripod or other means of stabilization (don’t hold the phone). Anything equivalent to an iPhone 6 series will be fine.

I know some of the prescreen schools that may take a walk in at unifieds will still have you submit the same application (including prescreen in some cases) even after a live audition. It is “equitable” and also provides them a tape to refer back to.

Although this school was not a walk in for my daughter, I know one director who was not at one of my daughter’s auditions (on campus no less). I wondered how that would give her a fair shot if the director of the program didn’t meet/see her. When he called to accept her, he said “I reviewed your prescreen tape” (after the live auditor recommended her). This was for a highly thought of and discussed program on CC - so the tapes are reviewed for more than just a prescreen apparently (by some anyway).
