I just found out that I am eligible to apply to become a Presidential Scholar. Has anyone else received a letter like this from the Dpt. of Education?

yeah i just got the letter...i think it's cause i got 2400 on the dec. sat

does anyone know if this is important or if colleges care...should i have my gc mention this in the midyear report?

It's important.

It's like National Merit for the SAT and ACT, only x50 more competitive. Only about 20-30 people in each state qualify. I didn't get it, though, because NC required you to have a 1590. :(

http://www.presidentialscholars.org/

It is definitely important. You can just list your nomination under the awards section of your college application, or if your GC can actually put on your transcript that you were nominated, that's even better.

oh wow it says here only 20m + 20f are nominated per state...hio...i thought it might be one of those scam deals when i first saw the envelope but obviously i was wrong

my state is really..not smart...considering i was nominated. My SAT scores were not that great....

Since apps are already sent out, I guess I'll have my gc put down the nomination on my transcript or midyear report or something...

It's a nice nomination to have....not a scam, although there are some scams with similar sounding names. This one is not a scam. Congratulations, I would definitely see that it got on your record somehow.

LadyinRed, what state are you from?

Is it only based on SAT scores???

You should check the link in #4, above, but based on memory from three years ago, the initial nomination is based on highest SAT score at one sitting. Once you're nominated, there is an essay to write, they ask for teacher and/or GC recs I think, and your HS transcript. If you win, your senators will come to meet you, you get to go to DC with your most influential teacher and meet the president, all-expense paid weekend. As Warbler said, it's like being a NMS on steroids.

Haha. Thats sucks for people in highly competitive states

September through October 2005. Not November? Ahhhh! x_x Well, you probably have to be a full citizen anyway. Oh well.

Yayyy three candidates from my school, 5 from my district in all.

And we're in NEW JERSEY. gasp

anyone know what the cutoff was for florida?

there were 5 from my school...strangely two of my friends w/ 1600's did not receive the award

that's what's making me wonder... a student at my school with a 2400 on the new SAT wasn't selected and they say on the website that they don't really look a writing scores... so what's the deal?

...i found out one of them isn't a citizen so there's an answer

EDIT: both are actually non-citizens so they were ineligible

It has to be a one-sitting score...don't forget that. 1600--now 2400-- in one shot (or whatever the top one-shot score for your state is). They don't mix-and-match for this award, as college admissions offices do. You can take the test more than once---but for the purposes of this competition, they only consider your best combined score from one sitting.
