Presidential Scholars Program 2009: Discussion

one of my friends from orchestra did get it tho, and she also got into Princeton. I’m pretty excited for her haha, hope she gets scholar

i got in! when do we find out about scholars?

I made it! I’m very excited, especially because I didn’t expect it. Lolcats, that’s great for your friend! I wonder what the college results looked like for the semifinalists.

got it:) i just hope that if i actually finish and make it for real, that the nat’l week is earlier june than the tentative dates… because i’m going to be on vacation :(

not all that fair that the big states have a lot more contenders than the smaller states, whose minimums seem to be set at six semifinalists.

but in the end, each state only really gets 2 (excluding the random 20 or so at large), so each state ends up evenish…

I got in too. we find out early may. and the most a state usually gets is 4 (academic, that is).

What I mean when I say its unfair is that the students in a larger state (which has many more competitors, such as California) are all battling for the same number of scholar places as a small state like Wyoming (which like many small states only have 6 people competing). I guess you assumed I was talking from the viewpoint of Alabama.

Found out I’m a semi-finalist…

Does anybody know what happens if you get selected but can’t attend the week in Washington?

I would doubt that you’d be penalized.

I am in the class of 2010 and hope to qualify for Presidential Scholar candidate for next year. I am an Illinois resident and have a 36 on the ACT but I have a 34 one of the sections. The composite gets rounded up to a 36. Did anyone in IL qualify this year with an average ACT score of 35.5? What did it take to qualify in IL this year? Do you need 36, 36, 36, and 36? Did any one qualify with less than this?

I believe you needed straight 36s

Semifinalists - Can anyone advise what the deadline is for submitting additional materials (photo, bio, etc.)? S’s name is on the list but we haven’t received the mailing. Guess he’ll be calling on Monday!

The deadline was the 24th.

Also, you don’t need straight 36s. I am from OH and I got a 35 on English and still made it.

It depends on the state. The poster was referring explicitly to IL.

It varies from year to year, too, so there’s no real way to predict what will happen next year. It seems like it’s slightly “easier” (haha) to qualify with SAT scores than ACT scores, since you don’t have to have across-the-board perfect sections.

I wish we could find someone on here who was a Scholar last year (there has to be at least one; come on, it’s College Confidential!). I’d really like to know when we can expect to hear the about the final decisions.

Last year they found out on 5/2/2008.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks usermom! Was it by mail/phone/the website?

First by website. However, they must have released it at least a few hours earlier to the local papers because someone we know at local paper told her grandmother just before she found out from website while at school. 5/2/2008 was a Friday so you may be looking at this Friday 5/1/2009 or next or who knows if it will even be same day of the week?

GOOD LUCK AGAIN!

According to YoungARTS’ Twitter site, the final list will be posted in 6 days (I’m guessing this applies to everyone, not just the Arts nominees). So it looks like it will be up on Monday!
