Hello, I've done some pretty rough calculations, but since I'm in-state, if I attend Rutgers I believe my tuition, fees, housing, and dining would come to approximately $23,000 per year. This would leave me with an additional $2,000 per year. If this is the case, would I be able to spend the leftover money on books?

I plan on asking when I go to a campus visit, but I figured I'd checked here to see if anyone had an idea.

23k is a bit of a low estimate. This year if you used the cheapest housing and required meal plan, your term bill for the year was closer to 25k (assuming you have your own health insurance). So for next year expect it to be closer to 25.5k for SAS or 26.5k if you are in SOE, Pharmacy, or SEBS.

Regardless, in the event that your scholarship is greater than your term bill, you receive the excess scholarship money as a refund check which you are free to do whatever you like with, such as buy books. Realistically speaking, expect at least your first two years to cost you a few hundred dollars each. If you opt to live off campus or reduce your meal plan in later years, then you’ll definitely receive a refund on your term bill.
