President's scholarship

Sorry - the above should have said 2200 SATs.

I was kind of suprised National Merit finalist seems to not count for anything with Maryland. Wish we knew earlier about all the schools with automatic free rides for that ;-(

^^ As I think I posted before, it’s STILL not too late for some of them.

Marnick- If you’re a NMF, it’s definitely not too late for U of Arizona or Arizona State, though I don’t know about any others.

@marnik If you add UMD as a first choice as a NMF, then they might give you a college sponsored-award.

Sadly, it seems to not be much, only up to 2k a year =(

Thanks - I believe UMD ranges from $1-2K for the NMF. It is stackable on top of the other but still not too much compared to other schools.

There are a few progrsm we probably would have applied to U of Ariz and U of Alabame are ones that would have interested her if no so darn far away. UMD is only a 4.5 hour drive which really appealed to her. She also has her heart set on double majoring with one of the degrees being dance and then education. Most of the dance programs you would have had to audition for already.

My OOS daughter was accepted to UMD and in the Honors College, but she has not received any merit scholarship notification yet. UMD is her first choice so she is ready to enroll. However, we are concerned that she may not receive any merit scholarships after she enrolls. Are merit scholarships associated to enrollment? Is there any benefit to enroll now instead of early April when all scholarship notifications are sent? Thanks.

I suggest you call the admissions office and see if she has received a merit scholarship. If I had not called I would not have known the letter to notify me about my merit scholarship was never sent. I am also OOS so it changed everything for me

I got 12k a year, look at my stats in my previous posts if you are interested, but they are not that impressive. I am sure it is 12k, got the letter yesterday and it says, “48,000 over four years”.

@Devil, UMd only looks at M and V, not W, so all they saw was 1500! Good enough for a really sweet scholarship :)

after weeks of waiting and calling admissions, i e-mailed my admissions counselor today and found out i was awarded $5,000/yr Presidents IS. Very excited, and congrats to everyone else!

Goldtortoise…just got my letter faxed to me today after waiting for almost a month. Was glad to see that the scholarship goes up with inflation. My other scholarships don"t do that. Visiting UMD next week so I can make final decision.

I see many folks who got the $12K OOS - congrats.

Now I understand that this is mostly based off Math and Verbal SATs (no writing). My daughters were 720 Math, 740 Verbal, and 740 Writing. So 2200 but 1460 for what Maryland uses.

She only got $5K - what did she need to get to $12K or $8K? And looks like these are the only two other levels??

they bank heavily on SAT’s. I got 8k per year In state, and Scholars program.

M: 760 CR: 800 (1560)

GPA: 4.1 W / 3.7 UW

Rank: ~30/410

many people with better GPA/Rank than I have, but lower SAT’s, received less money.

My daughter is IS, SAT 2340 (1540/1600), 4.0 UW, rank~9/360, very good ECs (I think), and only got $5K/yr, which would go along with what @Superfluous said above.

One quick question on NMF scholarship. Undertsand this is stackable and alos that UMD is typically $1K or $2K per year.

When would me daughter find out about that. Is it somewhat automatic or is it something that only certain NMF get?? She had labelled UMD as her top choice - although I understand she can change this up to May 1st…

i’d like to know that too, though i would expect it to be very soon.

i do know, however that NMSC releases the finalists names to their first choice colleges once, if they are chosen before march 1st, and once again if they are chosen before the 31st.

So I would guess that umd would release two waves of the college sponsored scolarships. Then again, they might just wait for all the names and then decide.

I called Admissions last week to ask about the National Merit scholarship. I was told that as long as you declare UMD as your first choice by the NMSC deadline (which I believe is May 31), you will receive the UMD scholarship. I.e., there are not a limited number of them. (Exception: A neighbor last year received one of the scholarships sponsored by NMSC, which I believe is a 1-time $2500, and therefore did not receive the UMD NM scholarship.) I asked how my daughter would be notified that she had been awarded the UMD NM scholarship, and was told it would show up in her online financial aid report, probably within a week or two of UMD receiving notification of UMD being her first choice.

Given that marnick1’s daughter has already declared UMD as her first choice, they must wait for a batch of notifications from NMSC.

Also, I was told that instate students are pretty much guaranteed the $2000 amount, unless it would make their package exceed their need level.

Yes, that is correct - I know for a fact that this first wave was sent to UMD and also that included my daughter.

Its been several weeks so I was curious why no notification has gone out. She only got the $5K OOS Presidents so we are going to need every extra penny to make UMD work including this and any other scholarship

I will appreciate if somebody can help me with answers. Do you know if merit scholarships are still being sent to prospective OOS students? Would the difference between TOTAL NEED and UNMET NEED (in the Student Financial Aid Budget information in the UMD Web site) be a potential merit scholarship? If you have received your merit scholarship information via mail, can you see that same information in the UMD Web site? Thanks.

My presidential scholarship shows up with my loan information on financial aid page
