Since my D was accepted to Dodge - yay! we are planning to attend Preview Day in April - can anyone tell me what to expect for the students as well as the parents? She wants to get a chance to meet other film students who she may be attending with, as well as see the dorms again (we did visit last summer) and get a feel for what will possibly be her new home for the next four years. She also wants to see if she might be able to take a dance class or three as she has danced most of her life as well. Is it an all day affair? What do they do with us parental units? Her grandparents are thinking of dropping by as well - could they handle the walking? Thanks for any insight!

Hi Artsmadre,
Preview Day is an all day affair starting in the morning; you don’t want to miss any pat of it. Classes designed for dance majors may accept non-majors as long as the student is at the appropriate technical level and the chair of the Department of Dance has given permission. Your D can even minor in Dance. You should discuss your D with the Department of Dance at (714) 744-7040 or dance@chapman.edu. You can probable meet with them on Preview Day if you seek them out. There is a full program for the Parents (and Grandparents) on Preview Day. Most of the time you with your D (or S) except when they breakout into their major meeting (see below). Parents can talk to the major Professor after the students meeting are over. Parents meet with the head of their students departments when the major meetings are taking place. There are plenty of places for Grandparents to sit if they are unable to do everything. There are even electric carts that campus security can use to drive them to Dodge College if that will help out. Regarding checking out the dorms there are tours to do so. Your D can also ask present female students to show them their room if she stands outside the dorm she wants to check out.

Preview Day is very exciting day! The students attending (along with their families) are those whom have been offered undergraduate admission for this fall and is the University’s final opportunity to wow them and basically knock their socks off prior to the national commitment deposit deadline on May 1; and Chapman U succeeds in every way in doing this. One needs to remember that students that have been accepted to Chapman U have been accepted at many other great colleges as well. But after experiencing & learning about all that Chapman U has to offer (small class sizes with experienced & prominent professors in their field that the students will be taught by along with the many internships that are available for students) and meeting their fellow students that will be on this journey with them it is very unlikely that a student will choose to attend a different college from what I have seen.

President Doti will probably starts thing off after a free breakfast with an incredible speech in the gym (that is not to be missed) on his favorite subject the virtues of Chapman U. Preview Day allows you to spend the day at Chapman U learning more about the University, your major, what your classes will like, speak with faculty etc. It is a great chance to meet with students you will be attending school with, and get any last questions answered. In the afternoon after a free lunch for your entire family you will meet with most of the accepted students in your major along with the professors in your major (parents do not attend this they have programs for them at the same time). Present students in your major also will be there and it is a real chance to get to know your program and what it all about.

The focus of Preview Day is on academics, to showcase the wide range of offerings at Chapman and to show that Chapman as an institution expects students to be active participants in their education. Academic sessions from each of the Chapman schools and colleges will give way to campus tours and interest sessions (including career development, study abroad, the honors program and residence life), as well as meetings for parents of future Panthers. Have a great time on this exciting day in your D’s life!

When is Preview Day? I didn’t see anything about it in my son’s acceptance packet. Or is it only for kids accepted into Dodge? It sounds like a great day!

I believe that Preview Day was mid-April, perhaps the third week, last year. I recall they sent email invitations to both student and parents shortly after acceptances. Chapman’s Preview Day blew our socks off, to be sure. It convinced our son, who already very much liked Chapman-Dodge, that it was the best place for him. He had other great choices–USC SCA, LMU, and UCSD among them–and has no regrets as a freshman at Dodge.

Preview Day is a lot of fun; it gives the student a true sense of the school, it’s very informative, and well done. Strongly recommend it!

I just got the mailer for it recently…it’s on April 20th! I would definitely be attending if prom weren’t that night!

Preview Day is for all majors. All students that have been offered undergraduate admission to Chapman U and their families are invited. Preview Day takes place on a Saturday in late April but the date I think is not advertised to the public just told to accepted students. If I remember correctly they send an invitation letter to the student and it is also shown on the student’s WebAdvisor account. The student is asked to RSVP for this event.

Thanks for the info (again!) sukahjoy and gladiatorbird - we’ve made our plans to attend, it sounds fabulous.

RobynSparkles, cosurf has the date and yep, postcard in the mail we must RSVP to. Now we’re even more excited!

Fantastic! It sounds like a great day. Thanks so much for the information. It is now inked in the calendar!

Just registered for it! Do they give you a tour of the dorm rooms as well or no?

Hi!

My daughter received her acceptance package last week. But we have not heard anything about the Preview Day so far. Is it coming in the mail? Nothing mentioned in her Webadviser account either… Any thoughts?

onwatersedge - my D received a postcard in the mail a bit after she received her acceptance letter, so maybe it will come soon?

samsam - we’re hoping for dorm tours but I assume there will be students living in them at the time…

Thank you artsymadre. I will look for it in the mail. Hopefully it gets here soon…

Hi, all! D is a freshman film production major at Dodge. We are from the east coast and preview day last year – first time she’d been on campus – sealed the deal for her! (She was also accepted at NYU Tisch.)

Preview Day events were as described above, and Chapman does a wonderful job of putting on informative and meaningful parallel parent events. Last year, D and I were able to attend an additional and very worthwhile Dodge event, their annual Women in Film symposium. This year, though, the WIF date, Friday April 12th, does not coincide with Preview Day. However, if any prospective Dodge students, particularly females, are in the area, I suggest you try to attend this terrific event held at Dodge, link below:

Sorry – Not “Women in Film” as I incorrectly stated above, but Women in Focus!
