Do the parents sit in when the adviser is meeting to help the kids decide on courses to take? Is there an opportunity to look over the options and perhaps discuss them with the parents before deciding on what classes to take for summer or fall? How should my d approach the process of choosing her classes (other than the obvious...keeping within the major)? We are new at this and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

The parents are NOT in the advisor/student meeting sessions. We looked up online (before coming to preview) what classes my DD would need for her major (during her freshman year) so that she had a pretty good idea what she would need to take. The advisor helpped her decide which order to take these classes in. The first evening of preview you will have an opportunity to see the course scheduling booklet that your child had been given. The kids spend the evening in the dorm working on their schedules. The second day of preview, they meet with their advisor at a preassigned time and register (or try to register....some classes that they had wanted may/may not be available) for the classes/sections that they had chosen the day/night before. Parent's are NOT present for this. At the very end of preview...around 4;30 pm, the student will get a printout of which classes they got into. If there are problems or if you need to change this schedule, they have to wait for their assigned time (in August for Fall classes) to drop/add. Many classes that were previously "closed" will open up during drop/add.
Make sure that your D picks at least one or two easier classes to balance out her harder ones.

What is your daughter planning on majoring in? interest? hobbies? I can maybe suggest some course that she might want to take. Personally I don't think parents should be a part of the course selection process, since they wont be the one taking the courses.
