I’m applying as an international undergrad to Ontario universities and I was wondering what the effects of a previous dismissal for academic performance would be on my chances. It was about a year ago from a university in another country, I had been there for two years and had three really bad semesters so the transcript is quite bad.
You will be required to provide a transcript from your previous school, and at most Canadian universities, you will be assessed as a transfer student.
What if I want to be admitted as a first year student? The transcript is pretty bad so I know my chances as a transfer are very low, that’s why I’m applying as freshman.
You can’t apply as a freshman if you’ve already attended a university.
Well, what are my options then? I’ve heard some suggestions that I could just leave it off but that would be fraudulent. I don’t know of any place that would take a gpa under 2.0 which mine was.
Any help is appreciated. I applied to several universities in Quebec but all I got was replies that I didn’t meet the minimum requirements for admission. Does anyone know of a place that wouldn’t require the transcript of my previous university or allow me to get in as freshman?
If the fraud is discovered you will be expelled from the university and deported from Canada.
No I’m not suggesting that. I just saw some people make that suggestion and I wanted to say it’s out of the question before someone brings it up. The degree can be revoked even after graduation and any work permit/residency status achieved rescinded so it’s out of the question to do that.
What I’m asking is what can I do to make universities overlook that dismissal? Or are there universities or even colleges that would readily accept a student that was previously dismissed? Or maybe institutions that would allow me to apply as freshman should I so choose?
Any referrals or suggestions appreciated as I’m completely stuck right now and I’m getting many replies that I don’t meet minimum admission requirements even from very non-prestigious places.
No institution will allow you to apply as a freshman. There is a place on applications to provide additional information. You can explain your situation there. They will want to know how you will ensure that you will not have any more “bad semesters”.
Thanks for the advice, I did send to a couple of institutions explaining and laying out my plans to guarantee it won’t happen again.
Do you know of any institutions that would take a gpa under 2 for transfer or at least allow me to apply? Mine is 1.8, I have earned 55 credits out of 80. The replies I get say I don’t meet the minimum requirements for transfer and that’s basically the cutoff they don’t look at anything in the application other than that.
It sounds like Nipissing University would allow you to apply. Look at “applicants who were required to withdraw” on this page http://academiccalendar.nipissingu.ca/~/Catalog/ViewCatalog.aspx?chapterid=128#AppPostSecondaryEd Laurentian University may allow you to apply under the mature student category as well.
Thanks for the tip, bouders. I contacted them and just got the reply. They told me they can’t process my application as I have been sitting out for less than a year. I can’t apply before next February, if I don’t have anything by then I’ll do that.
I can’t apply as a mature student either because I’m an international application, they cited the line “International applicants are not eligible for consideration under Nipissing University’s Mature Student Admission Policy.” in their policy. Thanks again.
Did you ask Laurentian or Nipissing about the mature student category? It’s Laurentian that looks iike they would consider you under that category, again after you’ve been out for a year. https://laurentian.ca/mature-applicants
Thanks for the reply, bouders. I emailed Laurentian admissions office and I’m still waiting for reply. If they consider me a mature student then under their policy I can apply for May entry with the deadline being February. Something that caught my eye was that the application requirements for my country include 1st year at university, if I were to apply with a transcript of my freshman year only would they take that or would they ask for the two year transcript?
