Princeton 07 Answering Questions

I can't sleep (insomnia) so I'll be answering any questions you post.

I am so happy with your misery ;)
Anyways, will one fridge suffice two people?? or do we (my roomie and i) have to bring one each?

One should be more than enough. You really don't keep much in the fridge because you'll be living off the dining halls. I usually use it to keep my vodka cold (such is college) and various other things cold. I've never felt the need for more than one. The only thing I've found useful to have more than one of is a Brita (buying bottled water all the time is a pain, as is refilling the Brita).

So like one between the two of us??????

Yep, one for the two of you. In the grand scheme of things, the fridge isn't very important. Plus, in a freshman year room, you may not have very much space, so a second would be a waste and probably get in the way.

Thanks a lot! my roommate is getting one, so i'll share the cost with him then :)

No problem. It is probably easier for you too then because you are coming from India. Are you doing international student orientation?

Make sure he gets a biggish one. Princeton allows like 3 cubic feet I think? Some tiny ones are like 1.5cu.feet and that wont' fit anything

They allow 5.1 as the biggest (I believe - it is on the housing website).

And is there a common microwave for most of the hall, or at least for each dorm? Where do you go if you need to microwave something and you don't have one?

It varies by dorm. There are snack kithens in most -- or microwaves that you can get to. You can't have one in your room unless you rent a microfridge - which I would say isn't worth it.

Oooh good questions. Would it be wise to bring a hot water boiler and a microwave? My mom has a fuzzy little TV no one else wants - would it be worthwhile to bring it? Thanks for answering!

(ah, ok, just saw your post - no microwave. no hot water boiler either?)

There should be a list of approved heat-producing devices somewhere on the housing website. Buy it at Princeton, or at least after you've perused the list, since there are only a few approved models of each type of appliance. Your hot water boiler might not fit the bill, but there may be another hot water boiler on the market that's okay.

No microwaves unless rented from the Student Agency as a "microfridge" combo. Most people don't. There's probably one in your building, or very nearby.

does the Brita replace the need to buy bottled water?

you can also rent a water cooler from student agencies. i plan on doing that this year, since last year, buying water bottles all the time was a hassle.

Doesn't that take up a lot of space in your room?

id check out where you're living in terms of the microfridge. If you're in wilsonm butler, little, campbell or joline, there arent many common areas that would have microwaves. I know that almost everyone in my building had a microfridge last year-- and everyone who didnt used someone elses in thebuilding's, not a common one. Also, it can be easier freshman year to just rent a fridge because you dont know if youll be rooming together again next year. It is more expensive, but its nice to have a microwave.

Yea, that's what I thought. I don't think there is a lounge/common kitchen area in 1915 Hall...I'll think about renting. How clean are the rented units?

im pretty sure that the rental units are new each year-- im not really sure what they do with them-- but ours came all packaged and everything. I'd imagine that they'd have to be atleast in really good condition considering how much you pay for them, and the fact that its a student agency. If they got a bad rep no one would rent from them, as it is about as expensive to just buy the stuff.
