And another thing.

I hate the online app font. Just thought I'd throw that in :P

i disagree. i think the optional area is meant for an essay to explain anything else that ur first 3 essays did not, such as another passion. thats what the optional section is for. and its usually an essay...well everyone makes it an essay

yeah, I didn't need one though. what I really needed to do was give a more extended list of experiences, etc. that summarized/explained my education, but no one's going to have the same "obscure areas"--to each his own. I could have done it in essay form but it would have sounded choppy.

To answer that art portfolio question.... For mine, I sent in my 10 best pieces on slides since I thought that was what they asked for. I also tried to incorporate a range of mediums and subject matters in the portfolio. (e.g. I included everything from pencil self portraits, to watercolor landscapes, to oil still lifes etc.)

On the topic of supplements, is anyone submitting a supplement type that is not outlined on the directions sheet? For example, I talked with the admissions director, and she wanted me to submit my creative writing portfolio with my application, so I'm doing that. Is anyone sending in something along those lines?

"The one thing that I'm dissatisfied about with this board is that new replies go to the end of the thread instead of to the beginning"

blondelocke, you can change that in your options.

I wrote a 700 word essay for my optional. My counselor said that it's literally whatever you want them to know. So i wrote about a hobby i didn't get to express in the app. I think you can do whatever you want with that.

^ I agree. The optional essay can be about a topic important to you that didn't fit in your essays. For example, since I used my regular app essays and summer question mainly to discuss my interest and passion for writing, I used the optional one to talk about my art.

isnt one of the essay topics "write on any other topic of your choice or design"? isn't that the same idea, so you could use that essay to talk about anything you feel the above 4 topics doesn't have....

yes except if you talk about 3 things in ur first 3 essays and u have 4 really important activities then u want to make it known that u love this 4th one too and so u have the optional essay to talk about it

Blondelocke! I was wondering if you'd made the transition over...But you're here now. Yay! And thanks for the compliment. At least I know I have someone out there who's willing to admit they obsess over it about as much as I do. Good times, good times.

And you do journalism?! Too cool. I'm opinion editor of our school paper this year and am about to go to a conference at the local CC. Would you work on The Prince if you got in? I think that'd be kind of cool. Another thing to check off my "things I have in common with Blondelocke" list :)

Ooooooooooooohhhhhhhh.. we have OPTIONS! Thank you, zantedeschia, for enhancing my life in an unimaginable way.

And yes, philntex, here I am! Yes. Obsessed--very true. I am so pleased at your opinion editor thing. I'm E-I-C this year but if I were anything else, I would be opinion editor. Opinion pieces are essentially all I write, bleh. Right now, I'm writing an article entitled "Why Kerry?" in opposition to my copy editor's "Why Bush?"...yes, it'll be amazing. Kerry '04, beehotches.

As far as the writing for The Prince thing goes, I'm really up in the air about which publication I would go for. The Prince obviously has its strong points with it being any amazing college daily with a great staff, good reputation, blah blah blah, but my best friend's brother actually quit the staff because he said it was an extremely stifling work environment. I'm sortof reluctant to join the staff of The Prince because it seems like the place that all of the frosh journalists go to because they haven't done much research in comparison. I'm drawn to The Nassau Weekly, as well, because their online site is very impressive; they seem to do more in-depth reporting than The Prince, in part because they release 1/7 of the relative issues. And then again, there's The Tiger.........ahhh, The Tiger. I will probably end up there. I am most DEFINITELY going to join QUIPFIRE! improv comedy if and when I get to P'ton, and the humor magazine crowd is really more of my crowd, anyway. That publication is so effing intriguing. I think that I deserve a 'w00t!' for knowing way too much about this dang school.

w00t w00t w00t

sigh of relief,

i just finalized my 4 essays and typing up my application :-D WOOT WOOT

I'm still working on all of mine. I'll finish today, hopefully. I decided to do the optional one--I'm doing one that has brief novel-like episodes from my life (i.e. accidently having tea at a witch's home in Wales, meeting Winston Churchill's telephone operator in London at the theater)...about 4-6 of them, 150-200 words each. It's really fun to write and I think--I hope--that comes across.

Is that too weird? There really wasn't a clear-cut topic given...

lol you're welcome blondelocke.

I really think the optional one is completely open. Do whatever you want. What you're doing sounds really fun and interesting, Kebree!

I think that Kebree's idea is interesting, as well; but what does it say about you, personally, besides that you can be a witty storyteller?

It's just to show that I would bring some interesting experiences to a class :) Plus, a lot of personality comes through in the storytelling, i.e. what I find interesting in myself and in other people, etc.

Are 358 words OK for one of the small essays? I'll try to cut it down some more, but I can't cut off too much more than I have already.

mine are all over the word limit.
680 for the 500 word
350 or more for the 250. I sure hope that's ok because i already sent it...

some guy who got into yale last year had 1,200 for each of his 500-word ones...that's overkill, but if they were really, REALLY outstanding, then maybe they helped...

I would say that it is unwise to go over the word limit by more than 50 words. There's a reason that they have a word limit. Terseness is a skill. Anyone can be a rambling idiot...

mine are 370, 360, 594, and 781 (optional)

the ad com guy that came to our school just said relative length small essays - half a page, long essays about a page or less. so cuz my 594 essay is the same length as my 781 essay just a lot longer words :-D
