Princeton parent thread

Princeton Halloween is a big deal, but it happens the thursday before fall break. Most people leave on friday sometime, or on saturday morning. You have classes through midterm week (unless they changed something), so you have your normal classes, with either in class midterms or evening midterms.

^^^what ec1234 said:). Costumes are big. Parties are big. I sent a bunch of decorations from the Oriental Trading Company my son’s first year. Big hit:).

Anyone going to parents weekend? I am.

I’m going, but just for Saturday. I can’t wait!!

Going! We signed up for several events/seminars (http://www.princeton.edu/pub/fpw/program/</a> and https://winscript.princeton.edu/odoc/fpw/index.php</a>) and got tix to the game. Should be fun. Hopefully it doesn’t rain too much.

I am going too! Hopefully it will be a lot of fun, and busy schedule too…

So far looks like it will be sunny on Sunday. Have a great time with your S or D, and enjoy!

Yes. We are also heading down. So far we have been told he can go out to dinner Friday night with us but beyond that he’s not going to commit! He has some Saturday commitments I guess. Maybe dinner on Saturday too?

Glad they have some events planned that we can attend without him. :)

Looking for our D to travel to CT from Princeton for Thanksgiving break.
Any Ideas/Suggestion?

She can definitely take the train (Amtrack), would need to change somewhere probably. But she might be able to hitch a ride with a student driving home. I wonder where the ride board is now…hmmmm.

Hello everyone!
Just found this thread. To all of you who went to FPW - how did it go?
Any ideas on transportation options from Princeton to airports on Sat morning sinc ethe Dinky does not run?
Any idea whether students actually go off campus/home for Thanksgiving break (being only Thu+Fri). Is the place fairly deserted ?

I think the students who live within a reasonable distance from the campus go home after their last class on Wednesday. The rest stay on campus or go to the home of a friend.

@magple-
I went to FPW, I thought that was great and a lot of fun, more than enough activities to go to…

I think Dinky does run to EWR on Saturdays/Sundays/Holidays?

The Dinky DOES run on Saturdays but the earliest train is 9:27. Before breaks/during breaks, it’s also incredibly packed. A better (safer bc you’ll be able to make a reservation) option is the olympic shuttler. It’s more expensive ($33 1 way to Newark) but is fast and you’ll be guaranteed a spot. You could also cab it from Princeton to Princeton Junction (should be ~12$ for 1 single person) and then you’d be fine too.

And yes Princeton is fairly deserted on Thanksgiving. I had to stay freshman year because my family was out of the country for a funeral and was really sad because it was so empty. Luckily, one of my freshman seminar professors throws a huge thanksgiving for the department on their farm and invited a lot of students.

I thought FPW was very good and fun. The only bad part was S was have a cold during that time. On the other hand it was good to visit S when he needs care such as drag him out of bed to get something to eat. He looked great two weeks later when he came home. He had freshman 15, lost 15 lbs in 8 weeks.

I think this question was asked before, but …

Do most of the students go back after Jan 3 (or maybe a few days later) to study for the finals? Will all the dining halls open on campus?

Trying to book airline ticket, not sure about the returning date?

Thanks!

My son has class sessions scheduled for the Jan 4-6, so he will definitely be going back for those. I believe the dining halls are open.

I think most students go back for reading period. It’s a time for working on papers and studying. It’s not supposed to be time off although technically, I suppose, a student could just stay home. I know my son will be going back.

My D has a class midweek so she’s going back then. Technically the students don’t have to be on campus during the reading period unless they have class. Some courses meet and others don’t, so it totally depends on each kid’s schedule.

Thanks for all your replies… I think it’s a good idea that S goes back on Jan 2nd or 3rd, so he will be back and get into the mode of Finals :-)

Hello everyone! Happy New Year and Good luck to all of your S/D for exams
Now since we got them back to campus there comes the snow to Princeton !!

I am interested in knowing if anyone has had experience with housing changes. We know that they randomly assign students in groups to a residential college. If a student has a medical need however I heard that it is a long drawn difficult process of petition etc. Mostly at other universities processing is handled directly by their housing department. Anyone already been in this boat … thoughts/advice?

Thanks!
