For those coming from afar how do you plan to get your student's printer to Tulane? Ship? Buy in NOLA? Help!

I’ve been told that the students don’t need their own printer. There are printers available for them to use. My initial plan is to start without one and see how it goes.

Same as DebmomNY. I work on a campus and very few students bring printers. There are computer labs all over. If he needs one, that’s what Amazon Prime is for.

If anyone would need to print a lot it would be a Liberal Arts major, and my D found the allotment given by Tulane completely adequate. Printers are space hogs, relative to the size of dorm rooms.

My concern is that not only do you need the printer but a supply of paper and ink cartridges!

Yes, the cost can add up, although I think the actual usage is such that additional outlays are probably not needed that often. Unless they use it for things outside of school. I will have to ask my D how often profs required printed papers and how often they accepted epapers. I should be talking to her tomorrow, so I will let you know what she says.

I sent a printer when my oldest son started at Tulane. As soon as it ran out of ink, he “found” the printing stations on campus and never looked back. So when the second one started as a freshman last year, we just didn’t send one. A lot of assignments are submitted electronically now which really cuts down on the day-to-day printing.

I’m considering not getting a printer based on what I am reading. What I would like to know is how convenient is it to find printing stations around campus (where are they?)

They are in many places. I’ll check with my D this afternoon, but the ones I knew about were:

Howard-Tilton Library (This is the main library)
School of Architecture
(I think these are the only print centers with both regular and color printers)

Boggs
Willow Technology Commons
Business School
Cudd Hall

So pretty easy to find and to get to. Focusing only on the freshman dorms, The Willow one would be closest to Butler, Paterson, Wall, and Warren, the Business School would be closest to Monroe and Sharp, and the library would be closest to JL and the newest dorm formerly named Zimpel (I have to memorize that new name!). Architecture, Boggs, and Cudd would all be very convenient for classes you have in buildings on the academic quad.

I think the way it works is you get a budget from the school for $X each semester and use your splash card or student ID to print and they just take it off your allowance. Any overage gets charged to the bill sent (presumably) to your parents. Color is more expensive, of course.

My D said she didn’t feel the need for a printer. First semester she only used a couple dollars worth, second semester she used almost all of it. She also said if you are in a language class, you can print 10 pages at a time for free in the language lab. She usually went to the library or PJ’s on Willow. She believes the business school is only for business majors.

Ah, that is entirely possible about the business school, since it probably gets a lot of use just from those majors. But the architecture one I am almost 100% sure is open to all.

OK, talked to my D. She confirmed the locations, and that the business school printers are only for business students. Not only that, apparently business students get to print as much as they want for free. She says everyone else hates that, lol. She also said that one semester she did go over her initial budget and had to add $20 to her card. Still lots cheaper than a personal printer. She used the library the vast majority of the time, and occasionally the one at PJ’s (Willow). The library offers 2-sided printing, she wasn’t sure which, if any, of the others did.

As for the ratio of e-papers to hard copy, she said that was totally prof dependent, but that they made their requirement clear from the start. In her case she said it was probably about 2-1 hard copy to electronic only.

You already pay a fee for papers anyway - I htink they equated $25 for ~250 papers. So start with what you have paid for and go from there if your situation is different.

thanks all!
