Priority Applicant Decision Thread

Hi! just got accepted and into the scholars program!:slight_smile: should i be happy/proud about the scholars program? Is this a good program? I need more info about it!

coleman4, my d is a freshman in the honors college and she received the Presidents Scholarship. I can tell you that for her and the people she knows in both honors and scholars, more honors kids received merit aid. Definitely not all of them though. In fact in her experience, most did not. She does know a few scholars kids that also received scholarships, but not as many as the honors kids. This definitely isnā€™t official info, just passing along info from people that she knows.

I think in order to receive Presidents and B/K scholarship you need to be in Honros

accepted go terps! WOOO HOOO

Son got into Honors College, College of Computer, Math and Natural Sciences!!! Hurrayyyy! Now if only I also get response regarding my job (trying to change from contractor to permanent position!) this week, Iā€™ll see itā€™s been a perfect week!!! :)

@Coleman4 Some honors students (like myself) have average SAT scores but were still admitted to the honors college due to other factors. I had a great GPA, extracurriculars, etc. While the honors college does not evaluate solely based on test scores, I think scholarships depend more heavily on them. Therefore, some scholars students may not have had the grades or ECs or recommendations or whatever to get into the honors college, but had high enough test scores to get a scholarship. Iā€™m also convinced that they look at financial need, though.

Hooray! My S got a yes, and Scholars!

@teenbodybuilder , sorry you are having trouble getting your decision. My S had trouble logging in, had to switch browsers. Not sure what happened.

@bigbooklover Only honors students can get the banneker/key. Presidentā€™s ($2000-$12000) and Deanā€™s ($1000-$2500) scholarships are not restricted to honors.

I got into UMD, but am classified as a nonresident, although I have lived in Maryland for years. I already emailed to work on fixing that, and am not worried right now. But would that effect the possibility of scholarship offers like B&K?

@eenumber Iā€™m pretty sure more BK scholarships go out to in-state residents, so I would take care of that soon. Not sure about the other scholarships though.

@eenumber1, I assume they mean that you may not qualify for on-campus housing.

I may be wrong, thoughā€¦

I know two grad 12 kids who were in scholars, and got 4500 a year for each of first 2 years. Honors Iā€™ve heard through full tuition room and board plus small stipend. You definitely DO NOT have to fill put the FAFSA to get merit money.
If you get spring admit, that means you canā€™t live on campus until spring semester. You will probably be invited to the program that letā€™s you take some fall classes.

Accepted!! Major in Biological Sciences.
When will we find out about scholarships? (Iā€™m assuming when we receive hard-copies in the mail?)
Congratulations to those who were accepted! Go Terps, Class of 2018!

@heycall123 why wouldnā€™t you be? You could research collegeconfidential and find helpful threads - there are some valuable posts to be read.

@smilealwayss End of February/Early March

got into scholars. not sure if i should feel slighted for not getting into honors?

@jibler Thanks!

Here is an email that my D received today. This sounds like good news for the spring admits regarding housing.

Dear Maryland Resident,

The Department of Resident Life is excited to announce a new development concerning on-campus housing for Fall 2014.

Our department believes campus residence halls offer the most supportive housing option for freshman students as they transition to the University of Maryland. As the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prepares to release decisions for new applicants for the 2014-2015 academic year, the Department of Resident Life has sought and obtained approval to offer Spring 2015 admitted students participating in the Freshmen Connection program during the fall semester an on-campus housing option for the first time.

With long-term advocacy by the Residence Hall Association, and support from both the Office of Extended Studies and the Office of Undergraduate Admission, we plan on offering Freshmen Connection students housing on a space-available basis for Fall 2014.

The opening of Prince Frederick Hall in August will add over 450 new beds to the nearly 12,000 spaces currently available in residence halls and public-private partnership apartments. This increased capacity, along with the desire to provide housing options for first-time students makes the timing for this decision optimal.

Our recently posted ā€œFall Housing Outlookā€ stated that we anticipate being able to house current first, second, and third year students interested in returning to on-campus housing in residence halls or seeking spots in public-private partnership apartments, and this development for Freshmen Connection students does not change that expectation. We remain committed to offering our current students the ability to remain in our housing for 2014-2015.

More information regarding housing for the 2014-2015 academic year in public-private partnership apartments can be found at <a href=ā€œLeasing at South Campus Commons & The Courtyards | Department of Resident Life | University of Marylandā€>http://www.reslife.umd.edu/housing/commonscourtyards/</a> and our web site, www.reslife.umd.edu, will soon be updated in preparation for Room Selection 2014 for our residence halls.

We are excited about the future and our ability to provide a housing option for these new students to the University of Maryland.

Sincerely,
Dr. Deborah Grandner
Director of Resident Life

Son got in Honors! Anyone know when/how we learn of merit scholarship decisions?
