Private School(NYU) vs State School(Rutgers NB)

This fall I will be attending college and plan on studying Computer Engineering and I have narrowed my college choice down to two schools: New York University's Polytechnic School of Engineering in Brooklyn and Rutgers the State University of NJ at New Brunswick. I am really having trouble choosing between the two. This is the breakdown. For NYU Poly I would have to commute from Jersey City and the tuition alone is around $41,000(No fa given). For Rutgers I would have to dorm there and the cost of tuition and dorm is around $27,000. NYU Poly has a great Return on Investment(especially for their engineering program) and located in NYC filled with vast opportunities but the cost is a little steep. Rutgers is pretty affordable, it has a very good engineering program, and dorming may be an experience(I don't know how I feel a bout dorming, kind of in limbo about it). Right now I am leaning towards Poly but I don't know. My heart says Poly but my brain says Rutgers.

I’d go to Rutgers if only because it will give you a more traditional experience, and you don’t have to commute. You’re there on campus. You can engage with the school on a much more meaningful level than if you had to commute back and forth every day. The fact that it’s also cheaper and strong in your major are certainly pluses as well.

Keep in mind that there are CE opportunities in a variety of places with hiring currently quite strong. Though going to school in NYC may present marginally better job opportunities, I don’t think they’re enough to both justify the relatively long commute or higher price tag.

I"d go to Rutgers. For less money you can have a full college experience and get a good education.

Go to Rutgers and take the train into NYC whenever you want

PINYU (NYU Poly) shows up well in Payscale ROI rankings because it is almost exclusively engineering majors. Most of the schools that show up at the top of those lists are engineering heavy and/or are targeted by high paying investment banks or elite consulting companies.

However, other than the investment banks and elite consulting companies, post-graduation pay and ROI depend a lot more on your major than your school. I.e. engineering majors from any school (including Rutgers) most of the time (however, economic or industry downturns can hurt if you graduate then) will have better post-graduation pay prospects than most other majors.

Rutgers’ $14,000 per year lower price makes a compelling argument in terms of financial ROI for you.

Rutgers. Commuting from JC to Brooklyn every day is going to get tiring - I can tell you that for sure. It’s better for the cost and the program isn’t too shabby either.

How about the program itself. Is Rutgers’ computer engineering program comparable to poly’s? I know a diploma in engineering from NYU Poly is taken very seriously. I just really want to be able to find a job quickly after I graduate and preferably also an internship or co-op during the summer.
