My overall goal is to attend UCSB. I really like the environment, social scene, and education that the school provides. However, I am OOS and will have an extremely hard time, if not impossible time trying to pay for the $50+ tuition.

So my question is, what are the pros and cons of attending SBCC first then transferring? Obviously, it saves tons of money, and you essentially leave college with the exact same degree as if you had gone to the university for four years. If this is true, why doesn't everybody do this? There has to be some down side do attending a CC, because I feel like almost everybody would do it. Sure, the experience isn't the same, but I doubt that would be a primary persuading factor for most people. Any input on the pros and/or cons of attending a community/city college (specifically SBCC if possible) before transferring to a university would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is allowed, but I would like to bump this old post of mine in hopes of hearing some responses.

SBCC is a good school and sends lots of transfer students to UCSB each year. There are a few gotchas to think about.
OOS tuition at our CCs isn’t cheap either.
Room and Board/books/supplies expense is identical to UCSB - maybe $13k/yr+
Lots of CA who didn’t have the stats but wanted to live the UCSB life are competing for courses and your transfer slot. That can make a timely transfer difficult.
You will probably still be an OOS applicant when you transfer, look closely at the residency requirements.
You need to get admitted to UCSB as a Jr transfer - the requirements vary by major but that will require maintaining a 3.4 GPA or so. That is hard for many.

So, you’d be spending $20k+ per year for the CC… you might not make it to UCSB after 2 years and if you make it, you still pay as an OOS student until you graduate.

It is probably more sane to your local CC, save the dough, maintain a high GPA and transfer in as a JR.

Good luck.
