Pros and Cons of University of Miami?

What do you guys think?
Snobby students?
Academics?
Marching Band?

There definitely is a large segment of snobby, image-conscious students at University of Miami, always has been and always will. So what? That IS part of what UMiami is about but it’s not the only thing by any means. I was part of that group and found a university where I fit in and felt that I was part of one thing the university was known for. I am also gay and for the first time in my life, felt total acceptance by everyone. It didn’t matter or they just didn’t give a damn! I loved the University of Miami and think there has to exist at least one national university like it for people like me. You don’t have to be that way to fit in, but if you are it is a haven for people like you.

I don’t attend, but I visited two years ago, and I applied EA for the fall 2013 term. UMiami is definitely full of snobby, rich kids, but what 50k school isn’t? UMiami is beautiful. The campus is stunning: the palm trees, lake, etc. Also, Miami is such a great city! I’m Cuban, so maybe I’m biased, but I love the Cuban/Latin influence :). As for academics, the current President has worked very hard to make sure that UMiami improves, not only in rank, but that it genuinely does its best to educate its students! When I visited the campus, which was in mid-late August, I did see the marching band practice. Other than that, I don’t really know much about it, sorry!

The marching band is awful. However it’s a great school in a fun city and there’s a place for everyone.

Also, something to obviously consider is the area around it. Ik for me, it was TOO busy, so it’s up to you to decide if that’s a pro or con.

Growing up 5 minutes away from UM, I have to echo the statements Gary gave in his post. It’s not bad academically though the biggest issue for many students is the value of the education compared to the cost. It’s expensive, to put it bluntly. Many people I know have gotten scholarships to go there but the cost is still prohibitively expensive for many others, which is why there are quite a few of those “snobby rich” people. It’s in a great location though, and it honestly does fairly well academically, though you should definitely consider how much you’d have to pay to attend and how much you’re willing to pay because I honestly would not consider it a good value at sticker price.
