on the afa admissions page, which i check every day btw because i’m very obsessed, i’ve noticed that my application status went from Prospect to Applicant, it’s under consideration, and it’s competitive… so this may not seem very huge, but it is to me, i was screamin when i found out. lol… what comes next? packets in the mail this summer or what? some of you '11s help me out and tell me what happened as you remember it…

Hey congrats so far man!

Quote from the Status Page: *When you submit your application you become a "Prospect." When USAFA processes your application you become an "Applicant." Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a "Candidate."

If you are a junior, next comes your Candidate Kit URL which should arrive in the mail around summer time.

Then the Admissions process starts from there.

Nice job so far.

It will be applicant for a very long time, at least it seems like several years since you check it every day like I did. It then changes to candidate once your a little deeper in the process, around October/November for me. It was candidate until it said appointment offered under application status. Once your status is candidate you're among the 9,000 some-odd kids qualified to continue the application process. I think there is some fine print at the bottom of the first box on the web page that outlines the levels pretty well. I could be wrong, if I am about anything im sure someone will be glad to correct me.

Poster above outlined the fine-print blurb I was talking about.

It feels so weird seeing someone in the same situation we were just in about this time a year ago... the next thing you should see if you're competitive is "tentative candidate" on the status page. Sometime in the summer-ish?
Good Luck!!!! :)

Yes, I'm just glad it's over, hehe.

haha.. well i'm glad its starting.. thanks y'all

Good luck. apply for a nomiation as soon as you can, and get your app done early. LOA's and early appointments are great to recieve as you don't have to look in your mailbox everyday during March. It'll drive you nuts.

I got my status change (as well as a letter from USAFA, actually) today as well. Just contacted my ALO regarding the fitness exam and the DoDMERB physical. Things sure are moving fast, aren't they?

i've gotta wait til after school's out to get my final jr transcript before i can apply for a nomination.. i'll probably be done w/ the nomination process before july? and zachogden, what was in your letter?

HNeedle:

I'll scan the actual letter and put it on the internet for you to see (if you want), but the basic idea was "You're an applicant. Do your ACT/SAT if you haven't already [I did my SAT in march and my ACT today as a matter of fact]. Get your nominations. Get your CFA done." Basically just a reminder of the stuff I need to get done.

haha.. well there's no need to scan if i'll be getting mine shortly (hopefully.. lol) and i'll take your word for it. yea the act was today, i didnt retake mine.. i will this fall.. i'm pretty happy w/ a 30, but i need to pull up my math and sci/reasoning (both 28)

My status says not competitive. Does this mean that I can't apply to the academy? I know you can update your application, but will it hurt you in the long run if you were deemed not competitive at one point?

i'm sure its not the BEST thing... but you can certainly come out of it. improve your test scores, do more activities that involve you being a leader. you can most definitely get changed to competitive. it does NOT mean you cant apply, it just means that at this point you wouldnt be competitive for an appointment

At this point, since you're still a junior, you can do a lot, like get your test scores up, add activities (basically everything HNeedle said).
Gett ing second semester junior and first semester senior grades will also help too. You can apply still, you just won't be considered in March if you're still not competative (even if you have a nomination). However, I'm pretty sure you'd find people on here who were or know of people in this situation who got in by increasing scores/grades/etc.

The thing is, the application doesn't ask for leadership positions, extra-curriculars, and that sort of stuff which happens to be the strongest part of my application. It mainly focuses on GPA (I have a 3.8 out of a 4.0 which I think is pretty good), SAT scores (have only taken the PSAT. Taking the SAT for the 1st time in May) and Class Standing which I won't get until my senior year.

When you get the candidate kit, there will be a place where you can place all of your extra-curricular activities.

Ok, here's what you do. You call up the admissions office and ask if you're competitive (might as well call them now, as you will become pretty close if you try to pursue an appointment). I say this because that site might be wrong. From my experience, you can't trust it.
You'll also have to ask about receiving a candidate kit if you're not competitive. I'm think that you probably can't if you're not competitive, since that's what the CQ is for, screening applicants- though I don't work in the admissions office. If you can't, you'll have to email/mail in your updated info. Though I'm sure they'll send you info about that information, but I'd call just to make sure.

definitely call.. it cant do anythin but help. tomorrow i'm gonna call my assigned counselor at the Academy and ask her about some of the dates i'll need to know for this summer

Make sure that you continue to update USAFA on any changes in your application as you progress that could change your status into a competitive candidate, like SAT scores, GPA, leadership, etc. And sometimes the Academy does make mistakes. Last year there was a thread about some guy who was deemed to be noncompetitive, when really he was just from an extremely competitive private school. I don't know if he got an appointment or not, but he continued to work things out with admissions and did end up being allowed to apply. Don't get discouraged! Just keep working on the things you know the Academy will be looking for... academics, leadership, athletics, service, etc. Good luck! :)
