Prospective Fall 2015 Transfers

I applied a little over a week ago. Any other prospective MoHo transfers lurking around?

For future applicants:

I’m a 4.0 college GPA/3.6 in HS (6 AP, ~10 Honors), 2050 SAT, strong interview, no notably weak parts in my application but maybe no notable strengths either.

Federal EFC = 0 and MHC is need-aware (probably more so for transfers than first-years).

Ultimately, I was wait-listed.

@TiredQuibbler‌ I’m applying to MHC too. Did you get your decision today?

I only got it today because I was in correspondence with one of the admission counselors. I think they’ll release all decisions mid-April or sooner.

@TiredQuibbler‌ I’m sorry that you were waitlisted. I figured with MHC’s 57% acceptance rate, we’d all have a good chance.

Yeah, I felt somewhat confident. I’m actually still a little shocked that they chose to wait-list me. My application was good but obviously not good enough lol.

I hate to be that person, but I really think it came down to me being a high-need applicant. About a week ago, they asked for an additional document (not one that we originally needed to turn in) to further confirm my family’s income. I turned it in within a couple of hours of their request and that was the last I heard from them until this morning.

I’ve browsed through enough threads on CC to know that a handful of people who are wait-listed at MHC as transfers were accepted to LACs with higher ranks and generally more competitive admission standards. It makes me wonder if there’s something inflating the 57% acceptance rate.

Examples of this:

Just found out I got accepted! I’m so excited! I’m still waiting to hear back from other schools but it’s nice to have my first college decision letter back be an acceptance.

And sorry that you got waitlisted, @TiredQuibbler. At least it’s not a rejection though. And I saw you on the Smith transfer board (I’ve applied for transfer there as well) so I hope you get in there!

@meghanee‌ Thank you, I hope you get in there too. If not, Mount Holyoke is still a great option to have. Congratulations.

I got rejected but I had a feeling I would be. One down three more to go.

ugh, i have yet to send them college-related documents. :frowning:

Hey transfer people- what does this mean? https://www.mtholyoke.edu/sfs/transfer

the funding maximums? I am concerned… I will be coming in with over 60 units…

Are they accepting 60 credits toward your degree? If so, it means you’re only eligible for FA for 4 semesters. Iow, junior and senior year.

Yes, they are accepting 60. However, I was looking into it more and I may just ask them to take 43 (the maximum amount for 6 semesters of FA, my family can’t afford MHC without FA) so I can be there and get FA. Do you think they can do that? Im going to call the registrar on Monday.

What’s wrong with attending MH for 2 years/4 semesters? Isn’t that not enough time to complete your major? If you were to go 3 years/6 semesters, it will coast your family 33% more than attending two.

Oh believe me, I would much prefer that, from a financial perspective. BUT- when I talked with someone in admissions from MHC, she told me that there was a minimum residency requirement I had to meet, and that the first year at MHC does not count towards residency. So the minimum amount of time I’d have to spend there is 3 years.

Residency requirement? Residency of the what, MA?

Hmm, yeah that seems odd. I would certainly clarify that before committing to 3 years rather than 2, which as crewdad points out will cost your family more.

“To graduate, you must complete a minimum of 128 credits, 64 of which must be taken at Mount Holyoke. You must be registered at Mount Holyoke for four semesters a minimum of four semesters. This is the Residency Requirement. To receive a Mount Holyoke College degree, you must have a minimum grade point average of 2.00, meet the College and distribution requirements, and complete the requirements of a major.”

This SEEMS to say that 2 years satisfies the residency requirement. But if I were you, stitchpony, I would absolutely schedule a meeting (in person if possible, over the phone at the very least) to discuss how you want to enter regarding your credits and financial situation. Make sure that the FA advisor you speak to has your transcript in front of her (email it to her again if necessary) and make sure you are VERY clear that you need her advice on how many credits to transfer and what year to enter because your family cannot really afford the tuition as it is.

Ask her what she thinks your best course of action is. If there is a real, good reason to transfer as a sophomore rather than a junior, then have her explain what it is so that you and your family can discuss and weigh the pros and cons.

Please do this!

Thanks. I’ve never read other colleges phrase it that way.

That is what is says.
Transferring to a college as a rising jr is common.

Hi Stacey,

Yes I am planning to call the registrar (who I was referred to) tomorrow to talk about how I should enter MHC. My parents are surprisingly supportive of me going to MHC-- as long as we can get aid for all 3 years. There is some info on their FA website about how much aid transfers can get… its complicated. But I am going to talk to them tomorrow, make sure everythings ok, and if it is- I will be a MoHo in the fall! Please cross your fingers for me- I am soooo close!
