I have a feeling our letter will come sometime this week!
@Leibnizzzzz precalc 2, calc 1-3, lin alg, taking differential equations right now. Haven’t done Calc 4 yet so will have to do that when I transfer (Math 324)
A UW student (also math major) posted a few pages back that ACMS has a 50% acceptance rate, avg GPA 3.5
For math majors, you can’t apply to the major until you are enrolled at UW! So it wasn’t even an option for us to apply in fall as far as I know. I will be applying for the application due on Jan 15. :(|)
@Akeating Ok, before you accept the offer, read this post: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/11464415/#Comment_11464415 and maybe call UW Bothell?
Yes I got so bored that I read the transfer thread in 2011. Haha.
@snailshellz Oh my god. Will definitely call, thank you so much! I already extended it, so I hope they’ll let me extend it again I guess my advisor didn’t know what she was talking about!
Now I’m panicking
@Akeating Yeah, it’s on the UW website here: http://admit.washington.edu/Welcome/International/Conditions/MoreThanOneCampus
Ok, so it looks like you can confirm admission, but you can’t pay the fee without it being binding.
I didn’t mean to scare you!!! Hahaha.
Can anyone else clarify on this policy since it’s pretty vague on the UW website? Sooo much mixed information.
@snailshellz Oh that last paragraph in there! So I can confirm it, then withdraw before I accept the other one; I just can’t accept both at the same time I believe
So after looking around UW’s website a bit looking for more info on confirming enrollment, I found this:
http://fyp.washington.edu/getting-started-at-the-university-of-washington/advising-orientation-a-o-winter/
It says registration for the winter A&O sessions will open on November 23. So, I’m guessing that we will be hearing from UW before then? That is a week from tomorrow. Maybe we will have some transcripts load by the end of this week!
@Akeating Yeah, it looks like you can accept the offer, but don’t submit your UWB NSEOF until you hear from UWS!
Hey sorry by the way I really didn’t mean to scare you! I just didn’t want you to pay the fee and then be stuck going to UWB like that guy from 2011. Haha.
@snailshellz That last paragraph says I can pay & then withdraw before accepting the other campus, but then the 2nd paragraph (before it) says I’m no longer eligible to confirm enroll at another campus after I confirm/pay at a different one first…I’m so confused
RE: http://admit.washington.edu/Welcome/International/Conditions/MoreThanOneCampus
To get a for sure answer I’ll call first thing in the morning and let you know!
Not your fault at all! I should’ve done a lot more research before this deadline started coming up haha.
I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to help me!!! Thank you very much!
Oooooh since the registrations open next monday we’ll probably have some transcripts load tomorrow/Tuesday and get mail by friday
@Akeating if I were you, I would personally not accept admission from UWB at all unless you have clear cut information about how the system works. That’s just me tho. I don’t know, it’s just that I started panicking when I read that guy’s post from 2011 and I am not even in his situation haha. Definitely call tomorrow but be extremely cautious about confirming admission.
@snailshellz thanks for all the info! You really seem to know your stuff haha. I think we are going to hear back this week… After all this waiting it’s almost hard to believe that we could know any day now
@Leibnizzzzz Which ACMS option are you thinking about? I was a transfer student for fall 2015 and am currently an ACMS Math Econ major. I was accepted for both ACMS econ and BA Math (what I wrote in my transfer app), but eventually chose ACMS as the course selections and major work were more relevant to my intended career.
If you’re looking for a stat reference, my prereq ACMS gpa was 3.69, w/ 3.0 and 3.3 in calcs 1 and 2, 4.0 in everyting else (3.84 overall)
@Readyandwaiting I was wanting to do something with applied math and computer science, however I haven’t looked too much into the ACMS so do you happen to know if there is a specific option for that?
I was a little nervous because I put on my transfer app that I was going into Mathematics, then a few weeks after I sent it in I switched my plan to applied math and computer science instead… I’m hoping that doesn’t interfere with anything…
Also, great stats!
@Leibnizzzzz You must be speaking about the ACMS Discrete Math and Algorithms option.
https://www.math.washington.edu/acms/programoptions2.html
You might want to look into how many CS courses you’ll be taking (if you’re leaning more towards that route), because it looks like it’s 21 credits minimum but based on the page it looks like you’ll have access to closer to 30 credits at least. I aIso don’t think the planned major switch would affect anything. The ACMS and Math depts use the same dept advisors, both majors get the same emails (been true so far for me) and have overlapping prereqs
I just called UW and they said you just can’t be enrolled into 2 at the same time! So if you accept your first one you have to withdraw it and make sure it’s processed before you accept the other campus’
@Leibnizzzzz I sent in to have mine switched TWICE and I’m nervous about it too I called and asked to see if it effects their decision but the admissions specialist said it’ll show up & they can see that you changed it but it still doesn’t effect their decision! But you never know I feel like it makes me look like I don’t know what I want to do or something.
I’m just getting mad at the fact it’s taking so long, I mean don’t they realize we need to plan? I tried to reload my transcript again today and it still says error. If they knew it was going to take this long, they should have opened and closed the application earlier so we could have heard back by now
In past threads it didn’t appear that anyone’s transcript loaded prior to about 4pm. I check mine at the end of the night now instead of during the day. But really I don’t check it much at all anymore - so sick of that error screen. I just come here for updates.
Totally agreed that this wait is ridiculous. Winter quarter admissions are not as popular as autumn admissions, yet somehow it is taking just as much time to send out decisions? Craziness! And yes, so many people have to uproot their lives and get a stable living situation together in like 5 weeks’ time!
I guess UW’s answer would be to apply to another school/quarter. My problem with the wait isn’t about logistics, just that it’s hard to concentrate on my classes when I don’t even know where I am going to school next quarter.
Also @Readyandwaiting I read on a UW student message board that the UW math major is not very diverse (mostly international students from a certain country), that it is very competitive, there is substantial cheating/academic dishonesty, most math majors are Engineering rejects, and a couple other issues (class sizes too small, teachers not fluent in English). How much of this is true? The person who posted all this claimed to be an ACMS major. It sounds like a nightmare if it is true!
I am really passionate about pure math. I’ve always been that one student in calc raising their hand asking to see the proof. Lol. It would really break my heart if the UW math department is a sea of apathetic cheaters and engineering rejects who don’t actually care about math.
@snailshellz same with me! I’m only taking two classes this quarter and one of them is super easy, and yet I’m still getting behind just because all I can think about is UW. In past threads, people were notified around the 14th. I told myself on Friday that I would stop checking myuw cuz I was so annoyed at the error page, but I can’t help it haha
Well, I’d wonder how this source knows the major is super competitive for one. Fall 2015 was the very first time anyone’s needed applications, so I’d wonder how the dept already has a competitive history. As for the Engineering rejects, I could imagine such a thing is true, but I haven’t taken any math/acms department-only classes to give any personal experience. The claim of lack of dept diversity has a xenophobic air to it as well
@Akeating if worst does come to worst and for sometime dumb reason the Seattle campus doesn’t let you in because of Bothell, I don’t know if you saw but in a couple of posts back I mentioned how students who are admitted to one campus can take classes at any other UW campus. So even if you were a UWB student you could take classes at UWS. That’s what I heard from a representative at UWB anyhow. It’s not as desirable, and still aim for UWS, but it gives you a little option at least.
