Prospective University of Washington, Winter 2016 transfers?

Hey guys! I wanted to join too :slight_smile: i really appreciated reading all of the posts. Seattle is such a beautiful place. Im coming outta state from saratoga, california. I applied with a 3.84 overall with 84 units, and 3.9 in pre-business major. I didnt specifically state extracurrriculars except an internship at a tech company. And my essay was probably standard? Haha idk. BUT Im confused about one thing though, i didnt applied to Fosters, and just submitted a general application to UW and checked i was going to apply to my major school later. Any thoughts on that? Best of luck to everyone. I bookmarked this thread and hope we all get in :slight_smile:

@Akeating I’m very nervous, stressing all day everyday! My AA had about a 3.2, I think, and my associates of business is around the same, maybe a little higher. In all honesty, my grades are towards the bottom end of the statistics I’ve seen for admittance. But who knows, I’ve seen people with 3.96’s get denied admittance.

I transferred to an out of state university previously but decided to change my major so now I’m back at a CC and I’m applying to UW. So my transfer situation is kind of confusing hah.

For the major I applied to, my GPA is probably around a ~3.7. My strongest point of my application was probably my upward grade trend, and by far my personal statement. I’m sure by the recent classes I’ve taken, they can tell I plan to change majors, but oh well!

As far as demographics and ethnic background although the app stated it doesn’t matter, I’m half black half filipino from a lowerish income household, living with my single mom, aspiring first generation college student, and I also have had to work full-time for the most part during my college career.

What about you? What are your stats?

Everyone should make sure to post any news, updates, word of mouth, ANYTHING they hear or receive. I’m going to be looking out for the transcript uploading trick that I’ve read about in last years thread.

@dubstep I feel you! I cannot focus on anything and my heart won’t stop racing. I saw people getting accepted Nov 5-17 on last year’s forum. it’s so close yet soo far

Not bad! I’ve seen multiple people say they know someone that has gotten in with a 2.9, so don’t worry! You do however have a complicated situation, Hoping for the best for you!

I did full time Running Start my Senior year, and have a Cumulative GPA of 3.54 with an upward trend. I will have my Associates in business after this current Fall Quarter with about a 3.85ish. I think my personal statement was good but I know there were some errors in there. & I did not apply directly to the Foster’s school for winter either!

100% Filipino from an average family and all 3 of my older siblings graduate from UW Seattle. Worked part-time straight after college to this day.

Really feel like it can go either way for us!
Hope this thread gets more populated as the time comes. Really want to be able to talk to people who are just as nervous as I am through this whole wait!

@Akeating your stats sound solid. I’m sure you’ll get in. What major did you apply to if you don’t mind me asking? Yeah, exactly what I saw. November 5th seemed to be the first “batch” of notices of acceptance I saw. All the way until about December 7th. Hopefully we don’t have to wait that long.
I have a feeling if I do get admitted, it will be conditional or whatever the term is for it. The classes I’m enrolled in this quarter are pretty important so I think they’ll hold the right to revoke their decision until they see these grades.

@qwertyytrewq2 I wouldn’t stress about the age thing. In my opinion, I feel like that could play to your advantage since you have a story that is different than the normal applicant. I also would bet that the age demographics for transfer applicants, especially winter quarter, is different than what most of us would assume.

@dubsup why thank you! Not too confident though but I’m praying! I put Business Administration as my intended major. Even though I’m ready to apply to foster’s I am not too sure about business and I just want to get in first :frowning:
I would not be able to handle waiting til December 7th… I’m already freaking out now and I know when November comes around I’ll be even more crazy haha.

You have a good chance and conditional is better than being rejected!

If UW has me waiting until December… a full 3+ months after my app was submitted… I’d be ready to scream, honestly. I’m not sure what voodoo magic they do to the applications that takes so freaking long.

Hoping to hear soon!!! We’re entering the period when UW says they start notifying people. I haven’t started furiously doing the transcript trick yet but it’s getting there, for me.

As a side note… I’ve read that the average transfer applicant is ~23. Does your age and demographics really play a role in admissions? I would be surprised if that were true.

@dubsup I also think it’s weird that it’s so dead in here! The winter transfer thread was at like 20 pages this time last year!

Maybe it means that nobody else applied so we’re all gonna get in. :smiley:

@snailshellz Haha I hope that’s the case. I wish more people were in here, just for other people to share the anxiety with.
I really doubt they could discriminate on something such as your age…obviously what they decide behind closed doors is up to them. That being said, my personal opinion is that I really doubt your age has the ability to negatively affect your chances. UW is an older campus compared to most universities in washington, anyway!

@Akeating Have you applied to any back up schools? When did/does the app for fosters open? What do you plan on taking if/when you get admitted, if you’re not enrolled in your major?

@jameson992 Sorry, I didn’t mean to ignore you! And I don’t believe anyone else meant to, either.

I hate to speak on something I don’t know much about. I probably know just as much or as little about this process as anyone else in here!
But my understanding is that a huge chunk of UW’s judgment comes down to major preparedness. I went to a transfer thursday workshop at the UW, and this was definitely emphasized strongly. However, I did read on the website somewhere that they want you to make a decision for a major by around 105 credits if you are unsure at the time of applying.

Those are just things i’ve picked up. As far as how it’s going to affect your chances of being accepted, I don’t know if I feel comfortable saying because truthfully I don’t know! I could see it being good because you aren’t applying yet to a very competitive college ( fosters ) and it also being potentially bad because (from what my friends have experienced and what an advisor at UW told me) if you apply to a competitive major also and they accept you, that you more than likely will be “automatically” admitted to the campus of UW as well.

They (uw campus/general app) pretty much let the major decide if they want you or not when applying to a competitive major as far as I know. Only reason you would get denied by the campus but approved by your major would be a technicality, like a missing language credit or something that the campus of UW requires but your major specifically doesn’t.

Hopefully this makes sense and helps you some how, I’m sure if I know their technical terms that would help haha.
Your stats look great, even for an out of state student where it’s more difficult. Are you a CC student currently? I would be surprised if you didn’t get accepted if you are in fact a CC student with those grades. I love to hear you like washington! I think it’s a very underrated state

Just signed up to make a quick post. I’m a CC business transfer trying to get into Foster. I applied to UW Tacoma, UW Seattle and Seattle University. I heard back from UW Tacoma 10 days after sending in my application which seems really quick…but it is the Tacoma campus. Still nothing from Milgard though.

I probably won’t be spending much time around here, but I will make a post if I hear/receive anything from UW.

@dubsup Received my acceptance to UW Bothell last week, which is my back up! Foster’s applications were due October 5th I believe!
I hope to change from business to something else like informatics. I just really want to get accepted into general admissions first.

@fullmelt Welcome! Good luck getting in! What are your stats, if you don’t mind my asking?

@Akeating I feel like you have a great shot of getting in. You don’t need to worry!

Personally I keep alternating between thinking like “Of course I’m going to get into UW I have great grades” and “Oh god UW will never take me I’m going to be a loser.” From Sept. 1 to now I thought about my app rarely, but as November nears it’s increasingly on my mind. 8-|

Forgot to mention I have 100 credits! Really racked credits up from Running Start haha.

@snailshellz Thank you! I am the exact same way! It didn’t cross my mind until last week when I saw that people got accepted early November last year and realized how soon that was! Now the days go by sooooo slow… We got this!

Really would love to know how many applications they receive for winter quarter and accept too.

@snailshellz

Since you asked, my stats are 3.71 combined GPA and 3.8 pre-application GPA. Just gotta hope for a solid WSA score. I felt good about the persuasion task and so-so about the position task. We shall see.

@Akeating I’ve heard numbers like 60-65% thrown around for the acceptance rate for WA state community college students. I don’t know how true that is, though.

The only real stats I can find on transfer admissions are for fall 2014, when 38% of transfers were accepted, 86% of which were from WA CCs, and the mean GPA was 3.49.

@fullmelt Nice! You have a good shot GPA wise. I don’t know anything about Foster admissions though. Seemed like on past threads that Foster kids found out earlier than everyone else on their admission decision.

@Akeating Oh congrats on that!

@fullmelt Thanks for the post and posting for when you get ACCEPTED!

My UWB is asking me to accept my offer by Nov 1 :frowning: Hope they give me a long enough extension. If not I’m not sure what I would do…

@snailshellz Those stats seem about right from what I’ve read! But I was wondering for winter quarter; like if they receive/accept less applicants at this time compared to Fall and if it’s harder to get in the winter quarter than Fall!

@fullmelt Great stats!!!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I’m still really nervous, but I’m trying not to think about it. Albers is my backup to Foster, does anybody know about how competitive that program is? I can’t find any info on admission stats.

I’ll make sure to post if I hear anything new!

@fullmelt My understanding is that SU is not terribly competitive for transfer admissions. Don’t know about the business school specifically, but an SU admissions officer came into my physics class last year and said that anyone applying to transfer there with over 3.0 GPA gets into the engineering school automatically. Engineering is usually one of the most competitive majors, so I can’t imagine that business school would be much more difficult. All conjecture on my part, though.

I like the SU location and campus, but I couldn’t imagine paying their tuition. :(|)
