PSAT 2010 Wednesday Writing Discussion

Can anyone remember any more Improving Paragraph answers? I got rushed for time and almost didn’t finish…

That’s because you never tell someone to have done something; that would be absurd. You CAN, however, think that something has occurred.

What did you guys put for the concluding sentence (after sentence #12) for improving paragraphs? ><

What does telling someone to have/had been doing something have to do with be built/have been built? 2 totally different things, the answer is Have Been Built, the end.

Error IDs
Egypt - Should be “have been built”
Oblivious From
Younger of the 3 siblings
Comparing venom to rattlesnake
Insure
To where

Improving Paragraphs
37. Sentence to be deleted is the one that mentioned that “people liked the book” (sentence 11?)
38. The results have been interpreted in various ways
39. Using the vending machine is like using tools - like when they use sticks to get ants (something like this. very last question)

Improving Sentences

20 = A, the answer that started with “were”

However, as

He was using induction from the case of “tell to have been” to say that “to have ___” is absurd after any infinitive; I was explaining why that reasoning was wrong instead of brushing it aside.

My main point is that the “to” was NOT underlined, thus making have been built wrong. The sentence went something like this:“…the pyramid was/is thought to [be built]…” have been built doesn’t work anyway since it was built in the 1990s, and had been doesn’t sound right either.

pyramid was thought “to have been built” sounds fine to me.

You guys remember the question that said something like, “each of those who attended the meeting decided…”? Was the answer “to become _________s”? The blank stands for the occupation or job which I can’t remember… but can someone tell me if it was plural or singular?

What? What is “people liked the book”? I don’t remember any choice like that…

^^Feedback, I agree. I remember that it should have been plural.

^ACTTester, I just remember that it commented on randomly liking a book. Or something. Am I thinking of the practice test I took last night? LOL

I personally don’t see any issue with the segment
“…the pyramid was found to have been built…”

^^^^^^What the **** are you talking about? The sentence said 4300 years ago… and it was thought to have been built. Thought to be built sounds wrong.
^^^^I put to become firefighters…I think that’s right.

Yeah i just checked. The sentence deletion is in the practice test I took. I’m sorry for the confusionError IDs

Improving Sentences

20 = A, the answer that started with “were”

was that “better known” or “best known”?

^^^ that makes it even more wrong, then. You would say it had been built 4300 years ago, not it has been built 4300 years ago.

Was the Error ID sentence with “persist in” with people believing that cold is caused by outside, No Error?

^

No there was a subject-verb agreement issue there. I’m almost positive.

I don’t think the answer was “However, as…”. Does anyone remember the other choices for this question?

anyone remember the buffalo/ feline ability questions? I think I put C, E
