@AmyZhang: I’m in TX too! I got a 215 and I’m really hoping I made the cut off! Fingers crossed.
Does anyone know when the cutoff rates are released?

Do you have an asterisk on your score?

if she beats me as valedictorian next year i swear i’ll cry. jesus i sound conceited

Does that mean I get commended? What’s the typical cut-off for commendation?

@redballoons, it’s usually around 201. it shouldn’t go above 202 so you’re definitely commended with a 210

An asterisk next to your score means that you’re not a junior (which means your score, no matter how good, will not qualify you for NMSF).

I’m only seeing scores from as far west as Texas and one from Colorado. Anyone from California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, or Utah with scores, yet? I originally assumed that with regional offices, we’d get our scores out of the office in California, but that does not appear to be the case. Sending them from NJ during prime holiday mailing season is practically criminal negligence. :-)

I scored a 202-96th percentile, commendation? and also what does commendation really do?

DS in Arizona got a 209 which is the same as this year’s cut-off. Here’s hoping that it either stays the same or goes down. The last four years have been 211, 209, 210,209. Have no idea what to expect.

I’m in Arizona and got a 215. I’m fairly confident that this will make the cutoff considering the last few years.

My guidance counselor said this was the highest score in the school, which is surprising to me.

Just got mine this morning, and was suitably pleased.

224 overall-

80 Writing - 99%
80 Reading - 99%
64 Math (not my strong suit, I’m afraid) - 88%

I definitely made my state (Tennessee’s) cut-off (215), but where exactly do I go from there…?

@Ancolie

Your score is amazing! I believe that now it is just a waiting game.

Ancolie - In the spring you will get a letter stating that you were one of 55,000 high scoring juniors. You will have an opportunity to let 2 schools know you are interested in them. In the fall you will get an official packet stating that you are a National Merit Semi-Finalist. There is an essay to write and transcripts and recommendations from your school needed to be filled out. You will need to take the SAT and score 1960 +, by December of 2011.

In the meantime start looking for colleges you might want to attend. Look at the financial aid section of CC and research the colleges that offer full tuition for NMFinalists. Find one that you like and apply. It’s good to have a free or almost free option. Then look at other colleges. Think about what size, area of the country, type of school, etc. You will soon be getting a ton of mail. Look at the different schools to help determine what you’re looking for in a college.

Congratulations.

PSAT Junior Year Score: 223 (California)
PSAT Sophomore Year Score: 172 (Hahahahaha)

Yay National Merit!!! :)

PSAT Junior Year: 207 (California)
PSAT Sophomore Year: 192

Is the cutoff for commended students different according to state?

PSAT Sophomore Year: 203
PSAT Junior Year: 236 (80CR, 76M, 80W… missed one on math and got eaten by the curve! DX)

Assuming I didn’t flunk the SAT I took last week, I’ve got a half decent shot at NMS, right?

@neiro6, why would flunk the SAT if you just got such a great score. I got the exact score, and am really annoyed by that one math question. Also took the SAT this past Saturday. GL.

My daughter scored 230 as a junior (190 as a sophomore) in NY. Are the National Merit Scholarships need based or are some awarded on merit alone? We have 4 kids so financial aid helps, but we have scrimped/saved for school.

sha1of2 - congratulations on your daughter’s great score! There are many colleges that give wonderful scholarships for NMF’s.

Things to remember: make sure once your daughter is officially notified (I think in the spring?) that she’s NMSF that she completes the forms, essay, and has her SAT score sent in, and also that her schools fills out their form - all this to move on to NM finalist status.

Here’s a thread you should check out to become familiar with opportunities out there for NMF scholarships:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/649276-nmf-scholarships-updated-compilation.html

Official notification of NMSF for this year’s test takers does not come out until Sept. of next year. About 90% move from semi-finalist to finalist. It takes three things: filling out the application, not having disciplinary problems at school, and submitting a confirming score on the SAT to the National Merit Corp. No one knows exactly what the threshold is for a confirming score, most people think it is 1900-2000.
