PSAT Scores Class of 2012

What is the percentile needed for Commended? and how do you know whether the percentiles are national or state based?

^96.0 percentile nationally.

223 in PA

yay!

195 in IL

CR: 68
M: 60
W: 67

not bad for never laying eyes on any PSAT material before but def not semifinalist material! Oh well. Congrats everyone who did well! :)

■■■ 218 in NJ. Is there any chance the NJ cutoff will be a 218 or is that just in my dreams?

Nerdlings mentioned about a letter. When would these letters go out?
DS in Ohio scored a 215- what are his chances?

^I believe the letters are sent in April, but I’m not entirely sure. I know for sure that they’re sent out sometime next year though. Your son will make it with a 215 for sure; there’s no need to worry.

EDIT: Just checked, and the letters are indeed sent in April.

220 in CA. Guaranteed National Merit Semi Finalisht?

I just asked my school today and they gave me my unofficial scores.

CR: 76 (99th percentile)
M: 61 (83rd percentile)
W: 75 (99th percentile)

Total: 212

I don’t know my score breakdown yet (in terms of missed answers etc.), but obviously, you can see my weak area. I hate math. I know for sure that I omitted three math questions and got at least one wrong.
Last year, I got a 189, and I did absolutely zero studying this year because I thought that there was no way I’d make NMS, so I’m very pleased.

I have a few questions, though. With 212, I’ll definitely be Commended, right? Also, I did some research, and based on preliminary data, what are my chances for NMS?

State: Indiana

NMS cutoffs…

2001: 207
2007: 213
2008: 219 (?)
2009: 212

As far as I can tell, Indiana has never strayed too far outside of 211-213. The 2008 data was undocumented, so I’m taking it with a grain of salt. I hope that Indiana high school kids don’t get any smarter! I probably would’ve studied a bit if I’d known that I was going to score this close to the cutoff!

mominwestlake - the Ohio cutoffs for the last several years (HS classes of 2007 - 2011) were : 215, 211, 213, 211, 212. so your DS is in great shape with a 215.

my DD with a 211 is right on the fence. it’s going to be a long wait until April :(

I know this has been posted earlier in the thread but for newcomers, here are the state cutoffs for the past few years: http://www.collegeplanningsimplified.com/NationalMerit.html

Sorry for the double post…

@hischoolstudent

The cutoff for last year’s PSAT in CA was 219, so you and I are both cutting it extremely close in our respective states. (I’m in Indiana) As long as the cutoff doesn’t increase by more than one point for CA, you’ll be fine. I’m right on the edge in my state…

Unless some weird s–t happens, yes. So not guaranteed, but you’d have to be as unlucky as Robert E. Lee losing his cigar-wrapping-paper battle plans to the North not to be semifinalist.

What about me? hischoolstudent is above the max scores that CA has used in the past years, whereas I am in the middle of my state’s. Only once has it gone over. Is my chance of Semi-Finalist diminished? Honestly, I’m just glad I did as well as I did.

PRJ: Your wait won’t end until September. In April, your daughter will only be notified that she is one of 50,000 high scorers. September is when the cut-off scores will be known.

Try not to stress it too much.

Does anyone know what the highest cutoff in NY has been?

The highest I see NY was 221 back in 2007.

Is it possible I won’t get my scores until January…this is the last day of school until next year…

74 CR
76 M
80 W

230 in CA.

This kid at my school got a 240…that’s CRAZY. But he’s number one in our class so I guess it makes sense.

This kid in my house got a 240. But he’s not anywhere near number one in our class, so he’s disappointed.
