PSAT scores in relation to SAT scores

i took the psat and scored a 110 (55 m 55 v...70 in writing) in the 10th grade

i'm going to take the new sat now (i'm a junior with AP English and i'm in college trig)

was/is anyone else in the same situation?
how much did everyone else's scores go up?

Your scores should go up naturally due to having taken the test before, and thus having less anxiety.

Unfortunately, College Trigonometry and AP English do very little for your score---acing the SATs is about preparedness, strategy, and practice.

Buy a good book (Collegeboard's book is probably the best indicator of how you'll score on the actual test, while Kaplan, Princeton Review, and Sparknotes are better for the hardcore strategies), read through the strategies and concepts sections, and take a few practice tests. You'll be okay. Just having taken the test a few times before helps ALOT! The difference between my Sophomore PSATs and my Junior PSATs was huge! (85th percentile to 96th percentile!)

As for the PSAT scores being an indicator of your SAT scores---most of the problems are similar, for the most part. But the time factor (SAT is longer and beefier), the essay, and the improved difficulty of some problems (particularly math), means that it's pretty much all up in the air.

yeah, I had a big difference between my scores. My oct. 04 PSAT score was 218 (73 V, 65 M) while my jan 05 SAT score was 1580 (800 V, 780 M)

so you can defnitely raise your score quite a lot with just a little prep.

218 to 1580 isn't a big jump in scores...

Looks like a big jump to me! 1380 to 1580. Nice job.

There was HUGE leap in my scores. I took the Oct. '02 PSAT in 10th grade. I got a horrendous 155 with a 44 M, 55 V, 56 W. That's the equivalent to a 990, which is below the nat'l average SAT score.

When I took the SAT I as a senior, I got a 1350 (V:750 98th %ile, M: 600 74th %ile), so that is a 360-point difference in my score. The PSAT obviously was a poor indicator of how I'd do on the SAT. Btw, does anyone know what %ile my composite SAT score is? Is it above the 85th %ile?

Reviewing the strategies and taking practice tests in Collegboard's official study guide for the New SAT is the best way to gauge how well you'd do. Take the sample tests on Saturday mornings under timed conditions. Like with any skill, with the SAT practice makes perfect. Don't sweat it, you'll be fine.

Actually that is a big jump...IMO

A 1380 to 1580 is certainly a significant jump in scores. A 1380 is an average or below average score for the Ivies, while a 1580 is above the 75th %ile for Cornell, Penn, Columbia, Princeton, Darthmouth, and Yale.

Good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks a 200 point jump is significant.

lol Jyankees...

all comes down to how much you study.
All these people who said they jumped from 1380 to 1580 didn't do it just by sitting around, so don't think your score will naturally go up (it may, but only about 50~70 points). There are some hard workers in this forum

yea the scores do vary. I got a 204 on the oct 04 psats and a 1520 (760 M 760 V) on the Jan 22nd sat. But I did study like hell for one month before the test. Its all about practice.

YOU INSPIRE ME! My PSAT were very similar to yours, but I'm taking the SATs in May. Hopefully I can jump as well, I've been studying my behind off for this test.

not that much of a difference for me. i had a 225 on PSAT (73 V and 80 M) and a 1560 on the SAT (760 V 800 M). i need to work on writing though for the new SAT

jumped from a 1000 on 10th grade PSAT ( 52V, 48M) to a 1410 on the january SATs (760V, 650M)

Lol, thanks Socrates! An affordable prep class, a smart brother, and a bit of self-study can really work wonders for you. :D I hope your score leaps as well when you take the New SAT.

Elbereth, a 1350 = 93% http://www.collegeboard.com/prod_downloads/about/news_info/cbsenior/yr2003/pdf/2003CBSVM.pdf Good job!
