Psychology and English

I’ll be applying to UT this coming fall (fall 2015). I am interested in psychology. But is this a tough major to get? My backup would be English. I took AP Psych this past year as a junior(still waiting for AP exam result). I had a high A the entire year. I also took social psychology at a summer program.

The bad news is that my school does not rank. I have had a very rigorous course load in HS, but my SAT score is 1800. Is Psych and English reasonable options for me?

I am definitely submitting my application early— like the day the ApplyTexas app opens. I’ve heard that applying early can help my chances?

Thank you for your honest opinions and responses!!!

English might be a little easier to get into than Psych. Getting into Psych is doable but you need to improve your SAT scores. Coming from an unranked school you’re going to want to re-take the SAT or ACT and see if you can improve on it. Good luck! Here is a list of UT colleges and what the average SAT score is for each: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile/scores

Ok, thank you!

I feel as if you will get into Psych. I applied to McCombs and didn’t get in. They didn’t even consider my backup major which was undeclared in Natural Science. They told me to choose from a list of majors (majors in Liberal Arts, Education, Communication, etc). I picked Psych BS and that was it.
I say pick Psych as your first choice and English as your second choice. They will most likely consider your second choice if you don’t get into Psych since it is in Liberal Arts which is the biggest college at UT.

BUT JUST CONSIDER THIS. I am not sure how it will work for you since my school was ranked and I was in the top 7%. I have no idea how they consider non-ranking schools. I had a 1610 for SATs since I knew I had automatic admission. You may want to try again but I feel as if that is good. But look up and see if there is an average score for Psych majors at UT. Also, at orientation they said that it is harder to transfer into Psych then to apply from the get-go.

Thank you so much. I appreciate the feedback!

Try the ACT. Or better yet, take a prep class where they assess if the SAT or ACT is a better test for you and then prep you for that test. You need to retest the first testing date in the fall.

One of your other posts says that you attend a private school. I think you should speak with your guidance counselor about your chances of getting into UT and how you can submit the best application possible. Your counselor should know the track record for applicants from your school. Also, decide if you are interested in CAP. You could get offered that option.

Make sure you have a safety.

Ok. Thank you!
