Psychology, math and science questions...

My daughter is a psychology major and is struggling with her current courses and/or professors. This is what she has so far...

Psy 301/Macneilage (Haven't read good things about him)
Ast 301/Willis (Heard he's useless and try to get Winget)
Phl 301/Mantegani (We are okay with this)
Ger 506/? (She took four years in HS)

My questions are:

Who is a good first year psychology professor?
If we can't get Winget for Astronomy, what course shoud we consider in it's place? She is not a strong math student but will work hard for a good grade.

Thanks for responding!

I’m a freshman taking PSY 301 right now with Professor Evans (formerly Rivers just in case its still listed like that). I’d so recommend her. It’s been a pretty good class with her. She’s really clear and to the point; her tests are by the book basically and her lectures are re-caps of the chapters you’re reading on your own. BTW, she’s young and cool - just as a sidenote.

Also, she always gives you a run down of the tests the day before and throws in little hints!

Especially good to mention! :)

You might want to get Prof Bradbury for Psy 301 if you can. She is suppose to be the best for that subject.

When it comes to PSY 301, there are so many great choices for professors. Samuel Gosling has outstanding reviews and is a leading psychologist when it comes to social psychology. I was astounded to read in a popular book (“Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell") that Gosling, a professor I might possible have, was featured! His research was extremely interesting and I’ve heard great things about his lecturing.

James Pennebaker is another outstanding choice- he’s chair of the Department of Psychology and while I don’t know much about his research, I’ve heard that he’s an amazing lecturer.

Professor Salinas and Professor Bradbury are other excellent choices. I think (don’t quote me) that Bradbury specializes in child development. The vast majority of students both gave both Salinas and Bradbury glowing reviews, namely for delivering the material clearly and test expectations.

If you haven’t already, go to [Professor ratings & GPA, class schedule w/Facebook friends | MyEdu](http://www.myedu.com) and register. It costs $5 to get full access, but this full access allows you to see literally dozens of reviews for each professor as well as a comprehensive grade history (for the professor overall and his individual classes). This will tell you how easy/hard he or she is. Hope I’ve helped!

EDIT: Oh and I would definitely recommend changing Astronomy. Astronomy at UT contrary to popular conception is full of chemistry, math and calculations. Perhaps she should try Biology? There’s nearly zero math and they have some really interesting topics such as “Molecules to Organisms”, “Ecology, Evolution and Society”, “The Biology of AIDS” and much, much more. Good luck!

I have taken a Physics course at UT and would support what Tim said; the physics department here is terrible.

^ That is entirely untrue! UT has one of the best physics programs in the nation. They have some renowned professors and such who do some groundbreaking research. It was all started by like some ex-NASA guys that an old teacher of mine knew.

Now if you’re talking about taking intro to physics classes as a non-physics major, of course the classes won’t be taught by the best professors, they have better things to do with their time.

Okay, I was wrong (and right). However, there is a certain professor who would not respond to my emails even if I am in his class. And the physics labs are graded harsh to make sure that only one or two of the students in class get an A.

But I do not consider the Physics Department one of the strongest on this campus.

Is there such a thing as an introductory physics class? i took it in high school but it would never compare. i had to coolest teacher though - physics tricks and stuff.

I was able to make some changes and secured the following schedule…

Psychology 301 - Bradbury
Philosophy 301 - Mantegani
Astronomy 301 - Winget
German 506 - ???

I’m very pleased with these classes!!! Woohoo!!!
